    ?? ?? ?? ??Over the weekend I attempted to teach my 6-year-old daughter the board game RISK. Have you ever played? Suprisingly, she caught on to the general concept pretty quick. In her first turn she learned a tough lesson - overwhelming odds in your favor don't always guarantee success. ?? ?? In her second turn she learned another lesson - sometimes you can achieve the impossible even when the odds are stacked against you. ?? ?? ?? What was fascinating was watching how erradically her behaviour as a player shifted based on the results immediately in front of her. If she got lucky once, surely she would get lucky again - and her RISK tolerance would grow until she was vastly overextended and vulnerable. She was REACTIVE - all over the map in her decision making (pun 100% intended). ? ?? It was her first game afterall. She had never had to build and maintain a global campaign before. She didn't have the foresight to anticipate the future threats to her empire, or understand the depth of impact to her goals some of the major RISKs she was taking presented. Unlike her father, she hadn't spent no less than 10 consecutive New Years Eve parties, a warm root beer in one hand, cheeto dust covered dice in the other, meticulously prosecuting global domination. ?? ??? I had learned some things about RISK tolerance and being PROACTIVE at that table - strategic planning, resource management, and the value of partnership. ?? Many leaders find themselves playing one of their first "games of Risk" with their businesses - fortunately, they don't need to roll the dice on their technology, business systems, infrastructure, and people.
