Dark Sky Association Honoured with International Green Apple Environment Award at Kensington Palace Dark Sky Association?has achieved a significant milestone in environmental excellence by winning an International Green Apple Environment Award, a prestigious recognition in the global campaign to identify and celebrate the greenest companies. Selected from over 1,200 nominations worldwide,?Dark Sky Association?received this coveted accolade at a glittering awards ceremony held at Kensington Palace, London, on 18 November. The event celebrated organisations committed to sustainability and innovative environmental practices, reinforcing the palace’s historic reputation. The award was presented by Helen Kitchen, Business Development Manager of Yealands Wines of New Zealand – winners of?The 2024 Green World Environment Awards?– which takes those awards to New Zealand next spring. As part of this achievement,?Dark Sky Association?has been invited to further their success as a?Green World Ambassador. This honour includes the publication of their award-winning environmental project in?The Green Book, an internationally recognised reference on environmental best practices. Through this publication,?Dark Sky Association?will inspire and guide others worldwide to adopt sustainable solutions. The recognition doesn’t end there—?Dark Sky Association?is then able to represent their country at the upcoming?Green World Environment Awards?in New Zealand next year. This international platform brings together the world’s leading innovators in sustainability to exchange ideas and further global environmental stewardship. The Green Apple Awards are organised by?The Green Organisation, a respected independent, non-profit environmental group established in 1994. Dedicated to recognising, rewarding, and promoting environmental best practices worldwide, the organisation’s efforts have grown to highlight the critical importance of sustainable action in today’s world. The independent judging panel of The Green Apple Awards commented “Embracing new challenges, Dark Sky? Alqueva has expanded its territory, broadening its audience and enhancing conservation efforts. This integration not only improves the quality of the area but also allows for the replication of the concept. The initiative has led to the development of Dark Sky? Portugal, encompassing both Alqueva and the Vale do Tua in the North.” Kensington Palace served as a fitting backdrop, with its royal history and iconic status as a premier venue for hosting globally important events. The Official Dark Sky? Observatory in Cumeada, near Reguengos de Monsaraz, is equipped with cutting-edge telescopes for solar and astronomical visual observations. These provide for a unique visual experience, from observing the planets to looking at the craters on the moon, moving on to the deeper sky with a cosmic journey among the nebulae, the galaxies and the swarms of stars which rise above us in one of the finest skies in the world. The wide open spaces around Alqueva also offer a wide variety of activities which supplement the pleasures of observing the skies – experiencing an incredible variety of sensations and tastes, such as relaxing at sunset as you enjoy a cocktail or taking part on an excursion to a vineyard or simply try the mesmerising sensorial experience of a blind wine-tasting by the starlight. Outdoors, surrounded by nature, you can go walking, enjoy horseback excursions by moonlight, or participate in astrophotography workshops under the guidance of the international astrophotographer Miguel Claro.
The Network of Dark Sky? Destinations in Portugal has been created and includes now: Alqueva, Aldeias do Xisto, and Vale do Tua, representing the South, Center and North of Portugal′s countryside. The main mission is protecting the night sky as a resource for sustainable development, but also and above all, to raise awareness of the importance of protecting this resource from the growing problem of light pollution, respecting and preserve it in a delicate way as a delightful heritage of humanity!
