Earlier this year, we were honored to be featured by Los Angeles Business Journal in a comprehensive look at DJA and our ongoing work with ArtCenter College of Design. Our founder, Darin Johnstone, spoke with reporter Howard Fine to discuss our portfolio and the future of the firm as we leverage our experience across a variety of markets and building types. 关于我们
Architecture is the ferocious pursuit of presence to actualize absence. We put objects into the world to achieve some kind of resonance. We may be searching for timeless qualities of strength, utility and beauty or contemporary qualities of strangeness, ambiguity or the uncanny. We put forms and shapes into the world iteratively ad infinitum to test these resonances. It is a tireless pursuit and all the while the thing we are looking for is the very absence of things. SPACE. This lovely paradox is what drives all the work. Architecture is an overarching discipline. Architecture is a way of thinking and operating in the world. This is why other professions and industries co-opt the term, for instance, ‘the architecture of the software’ or ‘the architect of the bill’…The discipline itself is surely not limited to the design of buildings. Architects throughout history have designed teapots, automobiles, cities and everything in between. This inherent opportunity, coupled with a certain amount of restlessness, has always emboldened us to accept all types of design challenges at all scales. Architecture is new every time. Form, collaboration, invention, and engagement generally describe a kind of trajectory we strive to produce afresh each time we are given the opportunity to design something. We do not come to any problem with a pre-set agenda. We believe every design problem contains the capacity to engender discovery. As a way of combating pre-determination, we attempt to engage each project on its own terms mining it for potential partnerships, techniques, systems and modes of operation. Despite the tyrannical forces of economy and fashion we continually strive to maintain a non-specialist experimental approach.

DJA is honored that the ArtCenter Mullin Transportation Design Center was featured in Sam Lubell’s article in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday- “The 8 best new architecture projects in L.A. 2024” https://lnkd.in/gWU_6Sac Quoting the article: “Curved white ramps and surfaces recollect the aerodynamic language of cars and their infrastructure. And the rhythmic original bow truss ceiling is a reminder that complex engineering isn’t limited to cars. The South Campus, thanks to this compelling centerpiece and some new connecting pathways, is starting to feel more like a coherent place.”

DJA Founder?Darin Johnstone?had an amazing time in Phoenix at the end of April, as he took part in the 2024?AIA Arizona?Associates Gathering, exploring the topic of "convergence" within the architecture and design profession. More from Darin on the weekend: "I so enjoyed my time with?AIA Arizona—I was able to share both my work and career trajectory as well as get inspired by the work of?Roslyn Cole,?Eddie Jones?and Jesus Robles. A big thank you to the professionals at?AIA Arizona, especially?Ana Astiazaran,?Sarah Levi,?John Czarnecki and speaker Mike Kolejka;?and a huge thanks to Eddie Jones who spent time showing me his incredible studio on Saturday and talking with such passion about the impact of the work that we do. I left feeling very inspired. My biggest thanks to?Ezio Zhang (Zhaohang)?for recommending me to speak and being my host and guide in Phoenix—including an all-access, back-of-house tour of the historic Taliesin West.
