Low Pressure Carburization (LPC) is a difficult process to develop by trial and error due to its highly non-linear response. During the process a series of boost and diffuse steps are applied, where boost steps have a high carbon potential, and diffuse steps have a very low carbon potential allowing built up carbon to diffuse into the part. Due to the high carbon potential, carbides can form in high alloy materials, and if attention is not paid to these carbides they can lead to excess coarsening or networked grain-boundary carbides that reduce fatigue life. Today's #AnimationFriday shows a simulation of an LPC process showing overall carbon on the left contour and carbide formation, and dissolutions, on the right. Notice the carbide buildup on the corners of the gear tooth where carbon enters the material from the flank and tip of the gear tooth. Using simulation can take the guesswork out of LPC process design. Contact us for more information. Building heat treatment models can be difficult. Luckily, we developed the DANTE Model Builder plugin in Abaqus to streamline the process. Today's video quickly shows the process of applying a thermal boundary condition to the tooth surface for a thermal model. Back again with #AnimationFriday Today, we have an animation of the heat treatment of a bolt going through an austenitization, quenching, and tempering process. The contours show temperature, austenite, martensite, and tempered martensite volume fractions, with a final hardness contour shown at the end. Hope you enjoy, and have a great weekend! #animation #geometry #quenching #DANTE #FEA #steel #heattreatment #simulation #modeling #finiteelementanalysis #ansys #bolt #cad #mesh #design #quench #hardening

One method for quenching knives is to slowly immerse the knife into oil with the cutting edge first to provide a hard edge, while allowing the back of the knife to cool more slowly, providing strength. Today's #AnimationFriday shows the results of an immersion quench model with the temperature, and the martensite phase fraction contours. The predicted hardness contour is shown at the end of the animation. DANTE is a cutting-edge software for simulating heat treatment processes in steel parts. It helps engineers predict residual stress, phase evolution, hardness, and part distortion during heat treatment. Using advanced finite element modeling, DANTE couples thermal, carbon/nitrogen diffusion, and solid mechanics to deliver accurate simulations. Key features include: Heating, carburization, quenching (gas, spray, immersion, press-fixtured), and tempering Metallurgical phase predictions and residual stress analysis Integration with Abaqus/Ansys Ideal for metallurgists, process engineers, and designers looking to optimize heat treatment processes. #AnimationFriday ! Today we show the design process for a selective low-pressure carburization of a gear. This animation shows the process of using our VCarb utility to design a schedule that achieves a surface carbon of 0.8% and a case depth of 1mm on the flank of the gear tooth. The designed schedule for the flank is checked on the root geometry ensuring the case depth and surface carbon is acceptable before executing the FEA model. Finally the FEA model animations show the carbide formation and dissolution during the low-pressure carburization process, and the weight percent of carbon diffusing into the part. This added carbon will form a harder surface, reducing wear along the flank of the tooth, and provides a compressive surface increasing bending fatigue life. It's that time of the year, when here in the States we prepare for the Thanksgiving feast. Over the past several years I have been using simulation to estimate the cooking times for my turkey by specifying the specific heat and thermal conductivity of the meat and cooking with different methods. In addition to the cooking times, the simulations also show "over cooked" regions on the birds with the temperature contour. The traditional stuffed bird shows why the breast meat was dry with a much higher temperature than the "core." The deep fried method and the spatchcocked method reduces cooking times significantly, and the model shows less "over cooked" meat with the spatchcocked method. Furthermore, the crispy skin (my favorite part) is better by spatchcocking compared to the deep-fry method and with some foil on the ends of the legs and wings everything cooks very evenly. Whatever your method, we hope your turkey is juicy and your table is full of joy and happiness this year. #AnimationFriday #Turkey #cooking #simulation #ansys #stuffing #deepfry #spatchcock #Thanksgiving
