In the DISCO project, we work with all the elements involved in satellite transmission. This includes planning, design, development, testing, and assembling all the components of the satellite. The satellites are CubeSats, which enable students to gain insight into the space industry on a larger scale while developing valuable competencies in the field. The satellites are sent into space, where they will assist climate organizations such as the Arctic Research Centre and IClimate. The satellites will collect data to help scientists study various aspects of climate change in Greenland.     Hvor meget metan udleder det danske landbrug egentlig? For f?rste gang er Danmarks metanudledning blevet m?lt direkte – i dette tilf?lde med satellitter. Vores studie, offentliggjort i tidsskriftet?Remote Sensing, peger p?, at metanudledningen er?56-75% h?jere?end de v?rdier, som rapporteres til myndighederne. Indtil nu har opg?relserne alene baseret sig p?, hvad landbruget selv indberetter. Men satellitm?linger peger p?, at?metan st?r for n?sten halvdelen af Danmarks samlede drivhusgasudledning. Vi ser samtidig en tydelig sammenh?ng mellem de steder, hvor metanudledningen er h?j og placeringen af biogasanl?g. Det rejser sp?rgsm?l om, hvorvidt teknologien bag biogasanl?g er moden nok til at levere den klimagevinst, vi regner med. Usikkerhederne p? vores m?linger er stadig store og vi har et betydeligt arbejde foran os med at reducere dem.   • ???Exciting Update on DISCO-3 ??? At this year’s AM Summit in Copenhagen on October 24th, an inspiring showcase of student innovation took center stage during the Space Challenge. As part of the competition, teams were tasked with designing our next space mission using 3D models of a 1U CubeSat. We are thrilled to announce the winning team: a talented group from Rzeszów University of Technology in Poland, all members of their own Space Engineering Science Club - Kick! ?? Their winning CubeSat design impressed the judges with its thoughtful and innovative features, including: ? Easy assembly and optimized use of space ? Integrated whip antennas for improved functionality ? A 3D-printed aluminum frame with an insulated battery compartment, enhancing power efficiency and battery life The team’s professional presentation highlighted both technical expertise and creative thinking, representing a significant first step towards a future DISCO mission. We’re eager to bring their innovative design to life as part of the DISCO-3 mission. ???? The Space Challenge was a collaborative effort between AM Summit, DanSTAR, the Danish Technological Institute, and us. It was a tremendous success, showcasing the incredible potential of student-led initiatives and cross-disciplinary collaboration. We’re beyond excited to see this CubeSat design take shape and look forward to working with the winning students to turn their vision into reality!     Physics MSc Student at Aarhus University, Student lead of the Danish Student CubeSat Program

    Two days ago, I had the privilege of speaking at the National Space Conference 2024 in Aarhus. First, I participated in a group discussion about the new generation of Danish satellites. Here, I got to talk about DISCO-2, while companies such as Terma Group and Space Inventor presented the missions: Bifrost, STEP, and Máni. It was amazing being alongside some of the bigger players in the space industry. Secondly, I gave a talk in the space science category on how to conduct science with at student satellite. All of the talks were moderated by Hans Kjeldsen who did a great job organizing this event. I also want to thank Christoffer Karoff for providing me with so many opportunities and for being an excellent sparring partner leading up to these talks together with Andreas Kj?r Dideriksen and Mads Fredslund Andersen. Several students from the Danish Student Cubesat Program team also attended to explore the conference. We learned a lot about Denmark’s ambitious new space strategy for the next 10 years - exciting times indeed! With keynote speakers such as Professor Carole Mundell, the Director of Science at the European Space Agency - ESA, this year was truly inspiring. And naturally, our group couldn’t miss the chance to get a selfie with Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen. Thank you to Aarhus Universitet Aarhus Space Centre, Uddannelses- og Forskningsministeriet and CenSec - Center for Defence, Space & Security for this year’s space conference and for giving me the honor of being a speaker. I’m already looking forward to next year!

  • A wonderful few days of inspiration, meaningful discussions, and shared passion for space have come to an end. Once again, we had the privilege of attending the National Space Conference, an event that never fails to energize and motivate. This year’s conference featured exceptional keynote speakers, including European Space Agency - ESA's Head of Science, Professor Carole Mundell, and Danish astronaut, Andreas Mogensen. Their insights left us all starstruck (literally!) and inspired to reach new heights. We leave the conference motivated and ready to continue work on our DISCO-2 satellite, set to launch next year. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who showed such overwhelming interest in our project—your enthusiasm fuels our mission. We also want to extend our gratitude to the organizers—Aarhus Universitet, Aarhus Space Centre, Uddannelses- og Forskningsministeriet, and CenSec - Center for Defence, Space & Security — for creating this fantastic platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, and of course for including us and our mission in the mix of incredible speakers.     De her studerende sender en satellit i rummet i 2025. Millionst?tte sikrer nu, at det ikke bliver den sidste??? Lige nu knokler Jeppe, Anne og Christian for at bygge satellitten, DISCO-2, f?rdig. Den skal nemlig med p? en raket fra SpaceX til sommer. Her skal den sendes i kredsl?b om jorden for blandt andet at fotografere gletsjere p? ?en Disko i Gr?nland, s? det bliver muligt at unders?ge, hvordan gletsjerne smelter over tid. Men de tre studerende er ikke alene om det. Slet ikke. Omkring studerende 70 fra AU, ITU og SDU har v?ret inde over satellitten, DISCO-2, som er et f?lles projekt mellem de tre universiteter med navnet Danish Student Cubesat Program. “Det er et meget ambiti?st projekt,” fort?ller Anne Thiel om satellitten, der bliver tre gange st?rre end sin forg?nger DISCO-1, der med sine beskedne 10x10x10 centimeter blev opsendt fra USA i 2023.? Og nu f?r projektet en ?konomisk indspr?jtning p? godt syv millioner fra Industriens Fond??? Studerende, iv?rks?ttere og virksomheder kan nu ogs? i fremtiden bygge cubesats – alts? sm? satellitter - der kan udf?re forskellige missioner i rummet.   • For tre uger siden holdt DISCO et rekrutteringsarrangement for studerende p? Aarhus Universitet. Det er altid en forn?jelse, n?r nysgerrige og engagerede studerende m?der op for at h?re om vores arbejde med CubeSats og rummet ?? Vi har modtaget en masse sp?ndende ans?gninger, og de udvalgte studerende er nu godt i gang med at blive en integreret del af vores projekt.     I dag havde jeg bes?g af to l?rerstuderende fra UCL Erhvervsakademi og Professionsh?jskole, nemlig Marianne Kaufmann Hansen og Clara Nürnberg. Anledningen var den nye udstilling “Fra Forsker til Folk”, der er ?bnet p? universitetsbiblioteket i samarbejde med Selskabet for Naturl?rens Udbredelse (SNU). Vi talte bl.a. om hvordan man kan bruge rummet (dvs. rumforskning og astrofysik) i undervisningen… Det blev til et par videoer om hhv. DISCO cubesat og Videnskabsklubben.
