Lydia Johnson Dance in rehearsals for the 2024 Season at the Martha Graham Studio Theater Premiere - December 4, 5, & 8, 2024 “It’s deeply meaningful to me that our company is returning to the same studio theater where many of my early works were performed. At the heart of my work is a sense of the shared human experience. Music is an integral part for my choreographic process and this season includes dances, recent and from the past, set to four evocative scores.“ Lydia Johnson founded Lydia Johnson Dance in 1999, creating a body of work characterized by emotional gestures, a connection to the human story, and a deep relationship with music. Her choreography has been performed at Jacob's Pillow, 92nd Street Y, New York Live Arts, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, and other renowned venues. Her creative process often reflects her life as a mother, with children featured in the casts of several works. Johnson trained on scholarship at The Ailey School and with Twyla Tharp company members, including Sara Rudner. ?? 1-4: LJD dancers in rehearsal for "Chapters" (2023). Natosha Washington's I AM // Repertory Dance Theater Premiere - November 21-23, 2024 About Natosha - Born in the south, and now living in Utah, Natosha Washington received her BFA in Modern Dance at the U of Utah in 2005. Since then she concurrently creates dance, teaches and serves the community, e.g. on the Salt Lake school district’s Equity Task Force or performing at the Martin Luther King Jr Day celebration. She first taught at Judge Memorial High, then Northwest Middle and now at West High, serving as its art department chair, dance specialist and dance company director. She received the award for Best Of State for all Public Education K-12 while at Northwest. Professional and collegiate companies in Utah, Idaho, W. Virginia and Texas have performed her work. Negotiating stereotyping, privilege, and identity each day as a Black woman, Washington embraces the challenges presented. Recognizing that art is only as strong as the community it serves, she focuses on illuminating and facilitating mutual respect and understanding as a teacher, mentor, creator and community leader. Lauren Lovette in rehearsal with Paul Taylor Dance Company dancers for the company's residency at Lincoln Center November 5 through 24 Statement from Lauren - "This Taylor season is a vibrant celebration of choreographic diversity and musical exploration. I am thrilled to present three distinct works, reflecting our company’s resilience in the wake of our founder’s passing, global unrest, and financial challenges. Despite these hurdles, our growing company has embraced risk and innovation, led by Artistic Director Michael Novak’s unwavering creativity and deep love for our art. It’s an honor to be part of this organization, dedicated to preserving Paul Taylor’s legacy while supporting Michael’s inspiring vision. This season promises to be truly moving, especially with our opening night—a gift to our city, with tickets priced at just $10. We are committed to delivering the highest quality performance to as many people as possible. I am particularly honored that 'Echo' was chosen for this event, featuring the electrifying live music of Time for Three, stunning designs by Zac Posen, and the passionate support of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. This work is not only a tribute to artistry but also a poignant call to healing, emphasizing the strength and unity among the Taylor men. Following the thrilling opening, I am excited to present two world premieres: 'Chaconne in Winter' and 'Recess.' Inspired by my collaboration with Time for Three, 'Chaconne in Winter' captures the ethereal beauty of snowflakes, exploring the delicate dance of two beings as they find and lose each other, much like snowflakes swirling in the winter air. The music breathes life into this piece, infusing it with sharp contrasts and quiet moments. 'Recess,' inspired by the nostalgia of childhood play, challenges my choreographic boundaries with its angular movements and playful spirit. Together, these works encapsulate a journey of creativity, resilience, and the joy of dance."
