Events Producer at The Dallas Morning News/ UTEP Multimedia Journalism Graduate

Today, my second article for The Dallas Morning News made the front page of the Juneteenth edition! I'm deeply honored that my piece on artist Christopher Blay, who converted a transit bus from the Civil Rights Movement into a memorial to educate visitors about the significance of buses during that era, was featured. I'm incredibly grateful that my dream of reporting for The Dallas Morning News has come true after graduating from college!

I can't hide it: I always love recruiting for MMJs. It takes me back to some of my favorite moments racing deadlines & battling the impossible to tell the best story. I see MMJ jobs as “Choose your own adventure" opportunities. A great story is what you make of it! Being an MMJ took me to the halls of Congress, to the commander's chair of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, and to the front row of history through many historic elections... all to try and make a difference through storytelling. If you "get it," send us your reel. We're hiring in Dallas where you'll chase breaking news, but also have time to craft special stories that require more nuance than one shift. Plus, you'll work for managers who have been in the field and are committed to moving the roadblocks out of your way before you feel them. The link to apply is here: https://lnkd.in/g2XeihYA

A new look at ‘The Chicano Experience’ — Professor Alfredo Mirande’s 1985 foundational sociology book has a completely revised second edition. Professor Mirandé’s foundational 1985 book analyzing the Chicano experience in the United States has been revised. On September 7, University of Notre Dame Press announced the release of a second edition of “The Chicano Experience: An Alternative Perspective,” a text that offers fundamental sociological perspectives of the lives of the largest minority group in the United States. This edition provides a new interpretation of social, cultural, historical and economic drivers that shape Chicano/Latino lives today. “I wanted to write a book about Chicanos from the perspective and lived experience of a Chicano,” said Mirandé, a University of California, Riverside distinguished professor of #sociology and ethnic studies, who spent the last five years researching and updating data for this second volume. “Thirty-seven years later, here is the updated version.” University of Notre Dame Press officials wrote in a news release. “With updated chapters revised in light of contemporary scholarship, this second edition speaks to the Chicano of today, in addition to puertorrique?os, Central Americans, and other groups who share common experiences of colonization, racialization, and, especially in the last decade, demonization.” Profe Mirandé, who has been teaching at UCR since 1974, is the author of 11 books, including “Gringo Justice” (1994), “The Stanford Law Chronicles” (2005), and “Jalos, USA” (2014), all published by the University of Notre Dame Press. He was recently working on his 12th book, to be published by The University of Arizona Press in 2023. ( University of Arizona ) ??: The Chicano Experience / Chicago Scholar #ChicagoScholar

"I was born in Danville, Illinois, but I spent my early years in Mexico after my family moved when I was four. Now that I’m in Dallas, my parents aren’t here with me – they're back in Mexico. The separation, oddly enough, gives me the strength to persevere and not give up, all for them." - Dallas College School of ETMS student Elisa. Read her story of dedication and family pride: What does your Mexican heritage mean to you? "Despite being born here, I have dual nationality thanks to my parents. I cherish my Mexican culture—it's vibrant and filled with happiness. Our family motto is to keep fighting and never give up. Even though times are tough now, I believe that hard work today will pay off in the future." What do you want to be as a professional? "I aspire to be a chemist. While my initial dream was to become a doctor, language barriers redirected me to chemistry. I love working with molecules and conducting experiments in the laboratory. I am a curious person, and I love to keep learning new things. I admire chemists because they are smart people, and dedicating their lives to this career is not easy. You have to keep studying, and the excitement of discovering new formulas must be something incredible." What drives you to keep going? "I've often thought about a quote I shared with my mom: "In this life, sacrifices must be made." My sacrifice is living without them. I want to provide the best for them, with the hope that one day they'll be here with us. My brother, moved by this hope, was in tears last night. I promise them, one day they'll be here—no matter the sacrifices." You were very excited to show us your doll. What does it represent or symbolize, and what does it mean to you emotionally? "The doll’s name is Lele. In Mexico, we have a tradition called Quincea?era. When girls turn 15 years old, they stop being little girls, and they become women. I did not have a Quincea?era, but my mom ensured I received my last doll. She said, “You are a woman now. You will always be our little girl for me and your dad, but it is time for you to fly. Make sure that the world sees the wonderful and mature woman you are.” #WeAreDallasCollege

Aaron Salinas, DNP, APRN, ENP-BC (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing '21) learned about hard work earlier than most — at the age of 5, to be exact. Salinas grew up in Edinburg, Texas, the son of Mexican immigrants. His father, Alfredo Salinas, worked in a fruit and vegetable packing shed, and in the summers, he would drive the family 12 hours north to Memphis, Texas, to work the cotton fields. Young Aaron spent every summer of his childhood pulling weeds in the hot Texas sun. The experience instilled in Salinas a work ethic that served him well. He overcame his hardscrabble upbringing to earn multiple degrees and certifications, become a paramedic and a nurse practitioner, teach at a university, earn a leadership role in his profession and his community and win a fistful of achievement awards.
