Are you the one? We are looking for a culture and food writer to join our staff. The position calls for a reporter with newsroom experience or strong interest in culture, arts and music journalism and criticism, and an authoritative familiarity with Dallas’ dining and nightlife scene. We’re looking for a journalist to report on human interest stories in the community, one capable of ideas-driven arts and culture pieces — someone with fresh (or really persuasive stale) opinions, a person of taste and a curious palate who can explore the city and tell the stories that make up its culture. It's been really hot 'round here?for a long while, but many throughout North Texas have felt something unusual over the past few days: rain. Only one week into November, we’ve had enough rain to almost forget that October came and went with hardly a drop.
Prediction: November Will Not Be as Warm and Dry as October. Or Will It?

The second week of #earlyvoting is upon us, and your helpful fact of the day is that voting early can help cut back on the number of political fundraising texts you receive. Texans took to the polls over the weekend, resulting in the statewide voter turnout outpacing the number of ballots cast by this point in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. Across North Texas counties, the higher number of voters was a welcome change after a slight slump in turnout midweek. That slump followed the flurry of excitement when polls opened on Oct. 21.?

The Fort Worth Police Department is sitting on hundreds of untested sexual assault evidence kits despite a 2019 law mandating evidence be sent to a lab and processed within a 120-day window, a recent NBC5 investigation found, leaving victims right’s advocates concerned that Texas police departments are failing survivors of sexually violent crimes. According to the NBC5 investigation, Fort Worth police failed to send DNA evidence kits to a lab within the state-mandated 30-day deadline 43% of the time over the last five years, submitting hundreds of kits more than 100 days late, and 28 kits over a year late. In the lab, 901 kits have waited 90 days or more to be tested, missing the state deadline given for DNA processing. Learn more ??

Dallas Love Field's days as a bastion of affordable airport parking have come to an end as the airport succumbs to a national trend of park-flation. Starting Oct. 18, daily parking rates at the airport are increasing by as much as 80% in some garages. According to a city hall memo, ridership out of Dallas Love Field has swelled to nearly 18 million passengers annually, exceeding pre-COVID numbers. That increased traveler count has resulted in the airport’s garages consistently reaching capacity — a strain being felt by airports across the country. Demand for parking at Love Field could certainly warrant a new garage, but one is not in the airport’s immediate future due to its being landlocked with nowhere to build.?

Last month, Dallas City Council member Jesse Moreno published a sobering call to action?in?The?Dallas Morning News?opinion section, the thesis of which was that the city’s approach to solving homelessness isn’t working. City leaders need to find new avenues to reach one of Dallas’ most vulnerable populations, urged Moreno, who chairs the council's housing and homeless solutions board. But it isn’t just the City Council that is struggling to determine how to best serve Dallas’ unhoused. According to a memo filed last week?by Dallas Fire Chief Dominique Artis, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s pilot community-response program — which deployed teams of DART police officers, Parkland behavioral health clinicians and Dallas Fire Rescue paramedics along the DART system to aid individuals experiencing homelessness or mental health conditions — ended on Sept. 27.
