It's that time of year! We encourage everyone 6 months and older to get a flu and COVID-19 vaccine this fall. New at the Dallas County Health Department is our Vaccines for Adults program. This program offers no-cost vaccines to adults age 19 and older who are uninsured or who have insurance that does not cover vaccines. Both flu and COVID-19 are included in the VFA program as well as other routine adult vaccinations. In FY24, Health Navigators visited with families experiencing more needs than past years and saw more difficulty connecting Dallas County residents with resources they needed. "Many of our community partners are strained by the increasing need in our county. Our navigators have done a great job helping our clients to problem solve when the resource we would normally connect them with is out of money or at capacity." says Abigail Chihak, Community Health Administrator and manager of the Health Navigation program. Despite increasing demands, the Health Navigation program maintained a 89% resource connection success rate. Congrats to all the runners at the Adel Sweet Corn Festival 5k today! Great work! Our Director, Suzanne, and Community Health team, Abigail & Natalie, helped with traffic control and cheering the runners/walkers on.

This week our team helped get Waukee Community School District families ready for school at the Back to School Family Resource Fair! Amy looked up vaccine records to assure students could confidently show up on day one without being turned away. Natalie provided health education on mental health and nutrition. Ann, Vivian, and Abigail represented the Health Navigation team, connecting families with dental and medical homes.
