Providing Justice and Restoring Hope

关于我们

The mission of Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC) is to improve the lives of abused children in Dallas County and to provide national leadership on child abuse issues. DCAC coordinates the investigation and prosecution of the most severe cases of child abuse in our community. Last year DCAC served over 7,300 children (and their non-offending family members) who were sexually abused, severely physically abused, or who had witnessed a violent crime. DCAC provides a warm, child-friendly environment to help children who are referred by law enforcement or CPS. Our average client is a 9-year-old girl, sexually abused by someone she knows and trusts.

In a recent Dallas Morning News article, our Chief Program Officer, Madeline Reedy, highlights the often-overlooked aspects of child safety. Abuse risks extend far beyond the high-profile cases we see on TV. Most child sexual abuse is committed by family members or trusted friends, often remaining hidden due to complex family dynamics. Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. Here’s how you can help: ?? Learn the signs of abuse ?? Believe children when they disclose ?? Report suspicions to authorities ?? Support organizations working to prevent and heal child abuse Read the full article to learn more: https://loom.ly/Nb6hHXM #ChildSafety #AbuseAwareness #ProtectOurChildren

President & CEO of Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center |Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

I was supposed to be famous and rich! From Dreams of Fame to a Vow for Change: Why I Chose Nonprofit Over Everything Else Growing up, I thought I’d be a New York Times bestselling author with my own daytime talk show. When people asked what I wanted to do, that was my answer, clear as day. Fast forward to what feels like a trillion years, and here I stand - in the nonprofit space. This is a world dedicated to serving those who don’t always have access to basic resources, to advocating for those without a voice, and to empowering people to break out of cycles of hardship. In nonprofit work, none of us are here for a paycheck; we’re here because we believe in the purpose behind what we do. As I was preparing for college, I still had plans to major in communications and journalism. But life had other plans. After 3 1/2 years, I walked out with double majors in psychology and counseling, driven by a purpose that would change everything. The turning point? A high school research paper. The summer before my senior year, I earned a scholarship to attend community college. My English assignment was to research and write my first full essay. I chose child abuse. I’d always believed that every child deserves to feel safe at home, one free from violence, but the reality I found was far darker. Back then, research was done in encyclopedias (yes I just dated myself). However, the image that changed it all for me was of a young Black adolescent lying on an autopsy table, after beaten to death by those who should have protected him. Something in me snapped. I took a vow then and there to do everything I could to prevent as many children as possible from enduring such harm. Today, after 30 years in child advocacy, I’m still keeping that vow. Maybe I could’ve earned more in corporate, been famous, or traveled the world. But, like so many emerging and current female leaders in nonprofit work, I decided my time was best spent helping others—serving, giving back, and making a lasting impact. Because nonprofit work isn’t just about filling a need; it’s about creating real change, strengthening communities, and taking a passion for justice and turning it into action. Why did I choose nonprofit work? Because every child deserves to be safe at home. Cheers to the best team out there Dallas Children's Advocacy Center! And for the other nonprofit warriors out there, what made you choose this work?
