NFNL’s mission is to help women and young girls who have been trafficked and sexually exploited to recover from complex trauma, rebuild their lives, and thrive. NFNL restores and empowers survivors through evidence-based, comprehensive programming, including case management, counseling, and educational services. NFNL also engages in community education and anti-trafficking advocacy efforts. To address the full scope of the issue of sex trafficking and exploitation, this organization spearheads advocacy programs that empower adolescent boys and men to be leaders in transforming mindsets and promoting healthier behaviors towards girls and each other. Our next featured charity is the Nexus Family Recovery Center! Nexus is a community of hope and recovery for all women and their families striving to live healthy, resilient lives. Nexus provides women in Dallas with the resources necessary to work through substance abuse, homelessness, mental health disorders, domestic violence, and trafficking. In 2023, Nexus served 1,720 women in its residential program, which includes care for pregnant women, parenting women, and children. The residential program offers a safe, stable environment for women to learn life skills while they receive medical and psychiatric services to help them recover. Nexus’s impact speaks for itself—in 2023, Nexus’s clients showed a 53% overall improvement across six major psychiatric areas, including substance abuse, relationships and self harm, and 74% of alumni of Nexus’s outpatient programs reported a positive impact on their families. ? Our next featured charity is Act for Justice. Everyone deserves to feel safe and at peace in their own neighborhood. Act for Justice is working with Dallas residents to make that a reality for every neighborhood in the city house by house, street by street, block by block. Through building relationships with people whose neighborhoods are affected by criminal activity, connecting residents and neighborhood leaders all united in the same goal of making neighborhoods safer, collaborating with the Dallas Police, city departments and local churches or other nonprofits, and working with its network of volunteer attorneys to advocate in the civil justice system for the legal rights of residents, Act is bringing this goal to life. Safe neighborhoods change everything, improving residents’ health, economic conditions and educational environments. Since 2009, Act has empowered over 400 residents to shut down 245+ high-crime properties across West Dallas, South Dallas, South Oak Cliff, Pleasant Grove, and now Fort Worth. ? Our next spotlight is Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program (DVAP). There are currently 611,168 people, or 25% of the Dallas County population, who qualify for legal aid. DVAP helps to fill the access to justice gap by recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer attorneys to provide free, civil legal help to people in need. DVAP volunteers provide advice, brief services, and full representation in a variety of cases, including family matters, housing, employment, landlord-tenant, real property, consumer, wills, expunctions and nondisclosures, probate, Chapter 7 bankruptcy, small business issues, veterans benefits, and more.?DVAP placed over 900 cases with volunteer attorneys last year and holds eight legal intake clinics each month to assist Dallas residents. ? Today’s featured charity is Scarlet Hope. Scarlet Hope is making a huge impact not only in the city of Dallas, but across the country in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation. Scarlet Hope exists to share hope and love with women in the adult entertainment industry through outreach, community, and Christian discipleship, ultimately providing exploited women with a pathway to a sustainable, alternative lifestyle outside the sex industry. With Dallas being the #6 city in the nation for the commercial sex trade, Texas being ranked #2 in the nation for sex trafficking, and around 45,000 currently women being exploited online in Dallas alone, there is much work to be done. When asked, 89% of women said they wished they could leave this lifestyle, but they fear there is no other way out. Through job connection programs, weekly programming, community resources, and one-on-one case management, Scarlet Hope is helping women all across the city take courageous steps into a new life that is safe and free. ? The Dallas Urban Debate Alliance is the second largest debate league in the country, and provides debate education to more than 1,500 students across Dallas.?From critical thinking, advanced research techniques, and argument formulation, to finely honed written communication and oral presentation skills, debate provides students the opportunity to become informed leaders in their schools and communities, and to develop their ability to advocate for themselves and others.?Research shows that urban debaters are three times more likely to graduate high school than their non-debating counterparts, and that they will graduate with higher GPAs and better ACT and SAT scores. ?
