Here’s a quick recap of the general election:
- Former President Donald Trump will return to the White House after presumably sweeping all battleground states — GA, NC, PA, MI, WI, AZ & NV.
- Trump not only defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the electoral college vote (312 to 226) but he won the popular vote too (51-47%).
- Republicans will retake the U.S. Senate with flips in MT and WV, but three states are still too close to call. The GOP will hold at least 51 seats beginning next year, and maybe more depending on the final results in PA, MI, WI and NV.
- The U.S. House is still too close to call, but the GOP currently leads Democrats 197 to 177 in the race to 218 to retain control or the lower chamber.
- In Texas, Pres. Trump defeated V.P. Harris handily by 14 points (56.3-42.4%) in unofficial results.
- Texas’ U.S. Senator Ted Cruz cruised to a re-election victory (53.2-44.5%) over Cong. Colin Allred.
- There were no upsets in the Texas Congressional delegation with Republicans winning 25 of the state’s 38 seats.
- Statewide, Comm. Christi Craddick won re-election to the Railroad Commission, and all incumbent Republicans won their TX Supreme Court races.
Texas Legislative races rode the Trump train to increase Republican control in both chambers:
- In the Texas Senate, it appears that Republicans will pick up one seat (20 REP to 11 DEM) as the most expensive race in Texas Senate history will result in freshman Sen. Morgan LaMantia (D) being narrowly defeated by Adam Hinojosa (R) in the South Texas SD 27. Results are not yet official.
- In the Texas House, Republicans appear to have picked up two open seats previously held by Democrats, so the Texas House will have 88 Republicans and 62 Democrats beginning in 2025.?
- Preliminary results indicate pick ups in two South Texas seats: a) HD 34 in the Corpus Christi area as Denise Villalobos (R) overcame former Democrat Rep. Solomon Ortiz, Jr’s name ID to win 55-45%; and b) former Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, Jr. (R) easily beat Cecelia Castellano (D) in HD 80 (59-41%).
- The real race for House Speaker is officially on, with some House members reportedly meeting last night and today via conference calls.
