Warrior? Hero? Brave? I’ve been called all of these. My favorite was “WONDERWOMAN” appointed to me by my then 6-year-old son. I rolled with it for awhile - mainly for the reason that Marvel characters were his jam back then. That was before my chronic illnesses were diagnosed. That was just when I was single momming it on my own and I was all my kids really knew. My kids still look at me as tough and strong, and that’s okay - they’re kids. I call my illnesses my “superpowers” cynically, but they really are. I have to do things differently than most people. I’ll still use the term warrior from time to time and I don’t mean it condescendingly. Life with invisible disease is a challenge and the number one mistake we make is acting tough and like it doesn’t affect us. I did this for the longest time. It was only when I realized I have so much to live for and awareness to spread that I decided to change the way I was doing life on the terms it was given to me. I started my digital marketing business because it was better suited to my life with chronic diseases. It allows me to make it to all my tests and procedures. It allows me to have time with my kids and embrace the moments I otherwise would have missed. When this year began, I was stressed about asking for PTO between my medical appointments, my kids, my responsibilities, and still having to show up and do my j-o-b. I only could take a week off, unpaid, in July, to vacation with my kids and see friends and family. I was grateful for that short time, but still stressed because I had already used up PTO for medical reasons so this week off would be unpaid. NOW that my digital biz is how I’m making a living, I am taking the entire month of July “off” to vacation with my kids, help my girlfriend on her farm, travel with my man, see my family, and just ENJOY life. The thought that I can go pretty much anywhere and do anything from this point forward is invigorating. I work 2 hours a day, I work from anywhere I have a WiFi connection, and I have a LIFE again. Self-love comes in many shapes and forms... This weekend it came in the form of relaxing by the pool, church, and dinner with friends. When I worked in EMS and then as an RN, weekends were non-existent. My 12-hour shifts were all over the place. When I worked my last corporate job, weekends were spent recovering from my 9-5 M-F schedule and they went by SO fast. Now, I can breathe. I do have training and mentorship calls inside our community each week that I try to watch live, but I don't stress about them because I know I can catch the replay. I try to refrain from using the word “literally.” If you know me, you know this. Literally is a redundant word. Widely accepted, but redundant.
