?? COP29 Throwback: Strengthening Resilience Across OACPS Regions ?? On 14 November 2024, the Caribbean Development Bank (#CDB) and Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) hosted an insightful session focused on enhancing climate resilience and disaster risk reduction (#DRR) in Small Island Developing States (#SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (#LDCs). Key discussions highlighted the need for ?? increased funding, support for multi-country proposals, and ??stronger preparedness through multi-hazard ??Early Warning Systems, a central component of the EU-funded Intra-ACP DRR Programme. Speakers like L. O’Reilly Lewis, CDB Director of Projects, and Jose Carlos Edo Monfort, Team Leader at #DG_INTPA at European Commission, reinforced the call for greater collaboration and targeted financing to address the ???escalating climate risks. A standout moment of the session was the all-women panel, moderated by Cristelle Pratt, OACPS Assistant Secretary-General. This session underscored the ongoing commitment to support vulnerable communities in the face of climate challenges. World Toilet Day In Nepal’s Western Terai region, the world changed for 41-year-old widow Surja when her family acquired their own toilet. For years, Surja and her son had to use their neighbor’s latrine, a situation that became especially dangerous during the monsoon season. "We lived in fear of snake bites whenever we went to the neighbor's toilet at night," she recalled. The USAID Nepal Karnali Water Activity became involved as part of a demonstration on containment construction that included a mason training program. They constructed a septic tank for the toilet while the family built its superstructure. “Now we feel safe,” said Suria. “We can use our toilet anytime without fear.” The project ensures that the entire sanitation value chain, from access to waste management, disposal, and treatment, is sustainable and resilient. By training local workers and empowering communities to take charge of their own sanitation needs, the project is laying the foundation for improved health. But access to toilets is about much more than just health and hygiene. We were thrilled to have our own Rade Glomazic, Ph.D. Glomazic at the Türkiye Pavilion at #COP29 Azerbaijan. Rade, who oversees our Türkiye portfolio as Director of Implementation for DAI’s #EU Business Unit, shared valuable insights on the panel about Circular Economy and Zero Waste, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of the Republic of #Türkiye. During the discussion, he highlighted DAI’s collaborative work in Türkiye through the EU-funded Assessment of Türkiye’s Potential on Transition to Circular Economy, which supports the implementation of the National Circular Economy Strategy and Action Plan. The panel demonstrated how our strategic partnerships and innovative solutions are driving the shift to a circular economy, reducing waste, and enhancing local economic resilience. DAI President Tine Knott will succeed James (Jim) Boomgard as Chief Executive Officer. Elizabeth (Betsey) N., Chair of the DAI Board, said in a message to staff that Knott will take over as President and CEO at the upcoming Board meeting in February 2025. Knott joined DAI in 2011, following 15 years with USAID, serving in Washington D.C., Jordan, Mozambique, Ghana, and Peru. Most recently, as President, she has worked closely with the CEO on strategic planning, while overseeing DAI’s donor businesses, private sector consulting, investment services, and global operations. Before that, she served as Executive Vice President for Strategy and Global Operations, Senior VP of DAI’s USG Business Unit, and Managing Director for Governance, Transition and Stability, among other positions. A graduate of the The Wharton School’s Advanced Management Program, she also holds a master’s degree in international development from the University of Pennsylvania. She will be just the fourth CEO in DAI’s 54-year history of driving lasting development impact.
