Avriel Epps, PhD is the visionary behind JusticeGPT. Avriel leads AI4Abolition, an organization dedicated to building community power around AI while working towards just alternatives to carceral systems. JusticeGPT is an innovative platform that integrates transformative justice principles to facilitate conflict resolution, harm reduction, and healing for BIPOC youth impacted by systemic injustices. Today, 48% of people serving life, life without parole, or “virtual life” sentences are Black. At the same time, research from MIT Media Lab revealed that facial recognition algorithms had error rates of up to 34.7% for darker-skinned women, compared to just 0.8% for lighter-skinned men. Avriel’s work is not just about challenging AI—it’s about reimagining how data and technology can serve as tools for liberation. Avriel is paving the way for a future where AI is used for justice, not oppression. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eaBHcPyN #DataforBlackLives #MovementScientist #AIforGood #DataActivism

Zakiya Sankara-Jabar is a national leader in the movement for educational justice. Zakiya is reviving and expanding her impactful School Discipline Report Card project to grade and expose discriminatory disciplinary practices in schools across Alabama, Maryland, and Ohio. In Alabama, Black students, who make up 33% of the student population, accounted for 60% of all disciplinary incidents, including suspensions and expulsions. Her work has already led to significant policy changes in Ohio, and now she’s taking her advocacy to the next level. Zakiya’s commitment to empowering parents and advocating for students is a powerful force in the fight against systemic racism in education. We are excited to support Zakiya as she continues to champion the rights of Black students and transform educational systems across the country. Kilan C. Ashad- Bishop, Ph.D. is breaking new ground in the fight against climate gentrification. Kilan’s project involves creating the first national database and visualization tool to assess flood-related climate gentrification risks at the neighborhood level across the U.S. By 2100, Sea-level rise will displace as many as 13 million people in the United States. In Miami alone, over 1 million will be displaced, a process we are already witnessing unfold in Black communities built on higher grounds. By merging census, environmental, and flood risk data, Kilan aims to provide communities with the tools they need to understand and combat the effects of climate change-driven displacement. Her work is critical in ensuring that Black communities are not left behind in the fight for environmental justice. Guillermo Akapo Bisoko is the driving force behind Blvck Pvper, a pioneering platform challenging racial discrimination in Spain’s media landscape. Guillermo’s project focuses on compiling data on how Spanish media impacts Black communities, perpetuating hate speech and racism. His work is a powerful reminder that media representation matters, and that we must hold media accountable for the narratives they shape. The SOS Racismo Federation's 2023 annual report points out that Spain has seen a significant increase in reported cases of structural racism, particularly in how racialized groups are portrayed in the media. Join us in supporting Guillermo as he works to amplify the voices of Black communities in Spain and ensure their stories are told with dignity and respect. Founder & CEO of Data For Black Lives

At Data for Black Lives we are playing the long game. Challenging Jim Crow required an army of lawyers and a national legal strategy. But new forms of racism and oppression demand new forms of activism, resistance, and research. This program encapsulates the work we have been doing since the very beginning to cultivate a new crop of leadership ready to take on the challenges of the present. These scholars, activists, technologists, and organizers reflect the ethos and call to action of what it means to step up as a Movement Scientist in this crucial moment. Join me in congratulating our Movement Scientist Fellows! Learn more about them at the link. Avriel Epps, PhD Bianca Kremer (she/ her) Guillermo Akapo Bisoko Kilan C. Bianca Kremer (she/ her) is a pioneer in the fight against algorithmic racism. Her research in Brazil seeks to reveal the economic losses driven by algorithmic bias in the platform economy. In Brazil, a majority Afro-descendant country where 54% of citizens identify as either Black or pardo (mixed), algorithmic racism remains prevalent. By analyzing socioeconomic data, Bianca aims to expose the intersection of technological inefficiency and racism in new digital systems. Her work is critical in understanding how algorithmic discrimination hampers Brazil's economic growth and further marginalizes Black communities. https://lnkd.in/eaBHcPyN #DataforBlackLives?#MovementScientist?#AlforGood?#RacismoAlgorítmico?#DataActivism
