Heather’s story is a powerful reminder of the crucial role early detection and patient advocacy plays in patient safety and, ultimately, saving lives. After surgery to address her diastasis, Heather experienced severe pain and declining health. Weeks later, her condition showed no signs of improvement. Despite being initially assured that everything was normal, she ended up in the ER, where tests revealed dangerously low blood pressure, extremely high lactate levels and failing organs. Shock, guilt and fear from not coming in sooner were only worsened when her husband heard a sepsis alert called for Heather’s room. Heather then spent 18 days in the hospital, followed by 4 days in a rehab facility. Throughout the three-week journey, Heather was unable to speak, and she experienced severe cognitive issues including memory loss, locked-in syndrome, and hallucinations. Despite these hurdles, Heather's journey to recovery was full of resilience and determination every step of the way. Celebrating her three-year mark post-sepsis, Heather continues to see progress in physical strength and cognitive abilities and remains vigilant. This #PatientSafetyAwarenessWeek, Heather hopes that sharing her story will help others recognize the signs of sepsis early and advocate for better care protocols in healthcare facilities. #PatientSafety

Meet Robert Quinn, Cytovale’s Senior Medical Liaison-- A liver transplant survivor and founder of Sepsis Scout, Robert has battled sepsis 18 times! Talking about his experience, Robert says that one episode, in particular, stands out. After a ski trip, he noticed sore legs and a warm face. Hours later, he woke up violently shaking with a high fever. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where his blood pressure was crashing, and his vision became pixelated. Thanks to a friend who rushed him to the hospital at the right time and a quick-thinking doctor who immediately recognized the severity of his condition and started the right treatment, he survived.
