Finding the right Contract Development Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) for your lead cell and gene therapy candidate is getting more difficult day by day. The House just took another step forward in that direction by passing the Biosecure Act. Here is some context: A similar bill was passed into law called The Chips Act passed by Congress in 2022. It restricted semiconductor manufacturing performed by Chinese government affiliated companies. This act upended supply chains as companies had to move business away from these semiconductor manufacturing companies of concern. A very disruptive move for many companies. What does that mean? The Biosecure Act is looking to do the exact same thing for biotech by restricting availability of clinical and commercial manufacturing done by companies of concern affiliated with the Chinese government. A majority of the cell and gene therapy biotech companies in the U.S. would be restricted from using CDMOs like WuXi AppTec as a result of this bill. As of 2023 WuXi AppTec had strong growth with a 10% market share of CDMO work in the cell and gene therapy space. Generating half a billion dollars in annual revenue during that same time. These life saving therapies can take years of work (5-10 on average) and they cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. What is that 10% market share going to do if the Biosecure Act is passed by Congress? Now more than ever there is a need to streamline the process of finding the right CDMO and then instantly integrating into their workflows in a clinical setting.
