Inspiring and enabling Muslim women to cycle

About us

Cycle Sisters is an award-winning charity which inspires and enables Muslim women to cycle. Our journey started in 2016 when our founder, Sarah Javaid, set up our first Muslim women’s community cycle group in Waltham Forest. Our first group started with just Sarah, her friend and sisters in law. Since then, we've grown to have multiple groups and support hundreds of women to cycle! We are passionate about ensuring that Muslim women have access to cycling without having to compromise cultural or religious values.

Access to cycling is a matter of justice. Cycling is about freedom, health, connection, and opportunity. It can reduce isolation, improve physical health and mental wellbeing, provide a low-cost way to travel, and open up access to education, work and community life. But not everyone has the same chance to cycle. Too often, communities are labelled as “hard to reach” – but we've seen at Cycle Sisters that when the right opportunities, support, and trust are in place, people do engage. The barriers are not in the communities themselves – they are structural, and they can be dismantled with the right will. That’s why I’m so pleased to see the APPG for Cycling & Walking's new report on Active Travel and Social Justice shining a light on these issues and offering practical, actionable recommendations. I’m proud that Cycle Sisters UK was able to contribute to the Inquiry – my brilliant colleague Sabeha Miah was one of nine people to give evidence in Westminster, and I had the privilege of sitting on the Advisory Board and helping to shape the recommendations. There are 9 key recommendations in the report and I’m pleased to see things we’ve long been advocating for included, such as: - Long-term funding for impactful organisations doing the work to engage communities - Free cycle training accessible to everyone, not just children in schools, which needs to be supported by a more diverse instructor workforce - Tackling the financial barriers to cycling, including an overhaul of the Cycle to Work scheme, alongside other ways to ensure access to a cycle It’s inspiring to see so many individuals and organisations aligned on this. We can’t create change alone – it takes genuine partnership across different sectors and I’m hopeful for what comes next! You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/egvXUq5b Thank you to Tom Cohen and Ersilia Verlinghieri for the opportunity to be involved. #SocialJustice #ActiveTravel #CyclingForAll #CycleSisters #Inclusion #APPGReport

  • ????♀? Cycling changed Zainab’s life – now you can help change someone else's. After starting a desk job and becoming a mum, Zainab’s active lifestyle took a backseat. Her energy dropped, her health suffered, and even keeping up with her little ones felt like a challenge. Then she found Cycle Sisters. Through our uplifting rides and welcoming community, Zainab rediscovered her strength. Today, cycling isn’t just her personal escape, it’s a fun family activity. ? This Ramadan, you can Sponsor a Sister and help more women like Zainab transform their lives through cycling. But there are only a few days left to make a difference! ? Your donation will go directly towards supporting Muslim women to build confidence, improve both their physical and mental health, and feel truly empowered – all within a safe, inclusive space that honours and respects their cultural and religious values. ?? • ??♀? What if one small change could transform your health and well-being? We all want to feel stronger, healthier, and full of energy, but getting started can feel overwhelming. The truth is, when we find something we love, that feels good and fits into our lives, staying active becomes easier! For Fatima, that life-changing activity was cycling. ?? Fatima’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we take control of our health: Despite suffering from arthritic knees, she feared that exercise might make things worse. Instead, she discovered that cycling eased her pain, improved her fitness, and gave her valuable “me time." She even says it has made her a happier mother. ?? Now, she’s inspiring others to live actively: Fatima’s love for cycling has spread to her children, turning it into a family activity that keeps them all moving together. By embracing an active lifestyle, she’s passing down good habits to the next generation! ??♀? Imagine what’s possible if more women had access to this opportunity. By supporting ‘Sponsor a Sister’, you’re helping women like Fatima take charge of their health, fitness, and future. Your support provides rides, lessons, and training, making cycling accessible to more women! ?? Donate now: https://lnkd.in/eTBu3BtP #SponsorASister #CycleSisters

It’s #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek, and as someone who was diagnosed with autism as an adult, I’ve been reflecting on what that means for me personally and for my work at Cycle Sisters UK. Since getting the diagnosis, I’m still learning new things about autism all the time, but it has already helped me make sense of so many things - such as why I'm able to pursue things I care about with an intense focus and energy, why I struggle so much in certain environments, and why I experience frequent burnouts. Last year, I wrote about my experiences of how cycling has hugely benefitted me as an autistic woman:? https://lnkd.in/eC9ZQZ85 The response to the blog has been incredible, with so many people sharing how they related to different aspects of it - whether it's the joy of a passionate interest in cycling, the challenges of sensory overload, or the way cycling can provide a sense of control in an overwhelming world.? Many neurodivergent women have gone through life undiagnosed or misdiagnosed simply because they don’t fit the stereotypes. They’ve often had to navigate challenges quietly, forcing themselves to adapt in ways that often come at a huge personal cost.? Over recent months, we’ve been listening to the experiences of neurodivergent women in our cycling community and using that feedback to explore how our rides and activities at Cycle Sisters can be more neuro-inclusive.??There’s still a lot for us to learn and figure out, but I’m excited to see how our work in this area evolves. If you have thoughts or experiences around neurodiversity and cycling, I’d love to hear them! #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #Autism #Cycling #Neurodiversity #Inclusion

  • At Cycle Sisters, we believe diversity is a gift from God and that every woman deserves a space where she feels valued and supported. ???? By breaking down barriers and celebrating what makes us unique, we create a welcoming community where Muslim women live healthier, happier and more connected lives through cycling. #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeurodiversityWeek #NCW #ThisIsND

  • ??♀? Meet Memuna from Hounslow ?? This Ramadan, as part of our ‘Sponsor a Sister’ fundraiser, we’re sharing stories of women whose lives and health have been transformed through cycling with Cycle Sisters. ?? Cycling has changed Memuna's life: “Cycling is now a key part of my life… I go out at least three times a week. I have encouraged at least four female members of my family who ‘in their wildest dreams’ would never have started cycling … we just find it so LIBERATING!” ?? And she credits the Cycle Sisters community for making it possible: “Cycle Sisters Ride Leaders are ALL inspiring and great role models.” By supporting ‘Sponsor a Sister,’ you can help more women like Memuna enjoy the life-changing benefits of cycling. Every donation counts. Donate now: https://lnkd.in/edCiFCUP

  • ???This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we’re shining a light on the experiences of some of our incredible neurodivergent Ride Leaders! Inclusion is at the heart of Cycle Sisters, rooted in the principles of our faith: "People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should get to know one another" (Qur’an 49:13) Neurodiversity is a beautiful reflection of God’s creation, and we are committed to creating a space where every woman feels valued, respected, and supported to enjoy the joy of cycling. ??♀? #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeurodiversityWeek #NCW #ThisIsND
