The BEST way to prevent cheating with AI in schools: assume students are using AI—and test for that knowledge in new and MUCH more challenging ways. Since this video has been going viral again on LinkedIn, I thought I’d reshare it here. The introduction of AI into our world means we need to raise the bar on what humans bring to the table. Kids in school today will step into a world with supercomputers at their fingertips. That means they’ll be able to solve vastly more complex problems and drive far more sophisticated innovations. But we need to foster that deeper thinking now. In the AI age, school should get harder. And that will require a broader redesign of education—an area I’ve been advising policymakers on for over two years. (P.S. As I mentioned in this episode and in many other talks—this moment shouldn’t fall on teachers. It has to start at the level of curriculum redesign.)

The child who will thrive in the age of AI: Some of the most important skills for the future are the non-technical skills. Reading, critical thinking, curiosity, play, imagination, teamwork. In fact, the skills we crave to hold onto as we grow older. We must prepare kids to adapt and think critically (and imaginatively) about the world around them. Regardless of the directions technology takes. If you know a parent who needs to hear this message, send this their way. SXSW

The Dream Team These are not the faces of DEI. These are the faces of the overqualified. And that, my dear, is the real fear. They are not in these rooms because of the color of their skin or because they are women. They are here because they’ve done the work. They are educated, skilled, and credentialed. Check the résumés. Read the bios. Take the box off that says race and gender—and evaluate them solely on their qualifications, and they would still get the position. DEI wasn’t created to give them a handout. It was created because they were disqualified for opportunities based on factors that had nothing to do with their abilities. And even now, despite being overqualified, they are often overlooked. They are in these rooms because they belong here, not because someone did them a favor. They didn’t inherit opportunities. No one made a call on their behalf. They started from the bottom. They worked twice as hard to get to the top. They deserve every opportunity they get based on their merit—nothing more, nothing less. And every position they hold—they earned it. Respect them—because they earned that too. Not just them, but others like them—those who have put in the work, exceeded expectations, and still fight to be seen for their true value. #EarnedNotGiven #Overqualified #TheDreamTeam #DEI #TheyBelongHere #blackgirlmagic #courage #unstoppable #blackwoman

Poorly Designed AI Tools Can Lead to Worse Learning Outcomes in Classrooms: Last week, I had the pleasure of delivering a talk on AI and the future of education. Artificial intelligence is set to transform not just how we teach but also what we learn. However, the way we design and integrate AI systems into the classroom will determine whether they enhance or undermine the learning experience. In my presentation, I highlighted examples where AI tools, intended to supplement learning, actually led to worse outcomes compared to classrooms without these tools. A recurring issue I’m seeing in many AI education products is the rush to bring quick-to-market solutions that simply layer AI on top of existing education models. That approach doesn’t work. On the flip side, classrooms that redesigned the learning experience—incorporating feedback mechanisms, personalization and prioritizing active learning—thrived with generative AI tools. It can’t just be about adding AI for the sake of meeting the moment. We need to design intentionally and commit to reshaping the broader learning ecosystem to truly achieve better learning outcomes. The opportunity is there—we just have to build it thoughtfully.

Working with Governments to Make Data-Driven Decisions by Day, Demystifying AI for Kids by Night | CDO Magazine's 2023 Global Data Power Woman

As someone who cares deeply about how technology shapes the next generation, I believe it’s essential for kids to understand AI—but also to know that no technology can replace what makes us human. Let Kids Be Kids, Not Robots! is a story that introduces AI concepts in a way that connects with kids’ natural curiosity. Jaz, the AI robot, and its new human friends discover both their shared qualities and their unique differences. In a world full of screens and smart tech, this book reminds us that while AI can help us, nothing replaces the creativity, wonder, and heart that only humans bring. Gift or get a copy today: ??
