(Late Post)During #NBA All-Star weekend in SF, I had the privilege of being part of #BeyondTheGameHealth, an incredible event that raised awareness for Lupus, Diabetes, and Mental Health in a way that was both engaging and impactful. In a short amount of time, Shamekka Marty PMP, CSM and Danica Collins, MS, NBC-HWC brought together a powerhouse VIP panel—Dr. Jeff Rocker, NCC, LMHC, LPC, Gary Forbes, Jennifer Lynne Williams, and Roy Collins, MD—along with a dynamic youth skills clinic, electrifying music by DJ Scotty Fox, and an unforgettable hosting performance by The Golden State Warriors’ Hype-Man Franco Finn. The result? A day that truly made a difference. This cause is deeply personal to me. For years, I was the primary caretaker for my younger sister, who was diagnosed with lupus at just 12 years old—after years of misdiagnosis. Her journey has been filled with immense challenges: multiple rounds of chemo, eight years of dialysis, a kidney transplant, and an unexpected side effect that left her legally blind. Yet, through it all, her strength, kindness, and perseverance shines the brightest. To every individual, organization, and advocate working to raise awareness and support for those battling invisible illnesses—you are seen, you are appreciated, and your work matters. As Pride Month comes to a close, it leaves us with a reminder that our celebration of diversity shouldn't end here. The small decisions we make every day can have a significant impact on fostering inclusivity and progress. We often believe we're supporting diversity, but it's important to reflect on how our individual actions contribute to the cause. Sometimes, it's the subtle, unconscious ways we interact that can make a difference. Consider a personal example from my family. I have four boys, ranging from a high school sophomore to college graduates. If I asked them all for vacation activity ideas, they'd likely suggest something like riding quads because it's "fun." However, if I included ideas from a female cousin or a girlfriend, shopping might come up as "fun" too. This simple example illustrates a complex issue. Our backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives shape our ideas and decisions. Embracing diverse viewpoints leads to richer, more innovative outcomes in all areas of life. Let's continue to champion diversity and inclusion, not just during Pride Month, but every day.
