Meet Dr. Amy Peden, a globally recognized drowning prevention researcher and keynote speaker at the 2025 California Water Safety Summit! She is a National Health and Medical Research Council Emerging Leadership Research Fellow with the School of Population Health at UNSW Sydney, Australia. Dr. Peden has wide ranging expertise across drowning prevention, and particular interest in data, rivers, and the intersecting issues of rurality, alcohol and exposure. Dr. Peden holds adjunct positions with James Cook University, The George Institute for Global Health, is an honorary Senior Research Fellow with Royal Life Saving Australia, and is a a co-founder of the UNSW Beach Safety Research Group. Mark your calendar for the 2025 California Water Safety Summit - March 4th and 5th in Huntington Beach! The California Water Safety Coalition is pleased to partner with the 2025 Local Host, The Huntington Beach Fire Department, Marine Safety Division, to bring you California’s peak drowning prevention conference! The annual California Water Safety Summit is a forum for collaboration on practices, programs, and policies that reduce drowning and aquatic injuries. The Summit is for anyone and everyone involved in drowning prevention and water safety - it is a multisectoral meeting ground designed to explore complex cross cutting issues, discuss and identify emerging challenges, and continue to build a collective statewide agenda that ensures everyone is safe in, on and around the water. The Summit will feature a variety of presentations and conversations across a range of drowning prevention topics.

We are very pleased to have two world-leading voices in drowning prevention join us in March as Keynote Speakers at the 2025 California Water Safety Summit: Dr. Tessa Clemens from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Dr Amy Peden from UNSW Sydney in Australia. Both Dr. Clemens and Dr. Peden are leading drowning researchers and practitioners with a wide range of expertise. From specific drowning contexts to using data to inform high level advocacy action, both bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Summit. Dr. Clemens’ Keynote Presentation will discuss several national-level drowning prevention research and intervention initiatives, sharing insights from across the country on the state of the field and future directions for drowning prevention in the United States. Dr. Peden’s Keynote Presentation will cover the journey of river drowning prevention in Australia, from hidden tragedy to national momentum and a reduction in fatalities. This talk is particularly relevant as over a quarter of all drowning deaths in California occur in rivers. ZAC Campers are making a splash at the Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton this week! The ZAC Foundation for Children's Safety kicked off our first ZAC Camp of the season with 100 kids from the #Fullerton area. All week, we'll be teaching safety skills through fun swim lessons and engaging classroom activities. This free camp is designed to boost kids' confidence in the water and teach them skills that will last a lifetime. #DrowningPrevention #PublicSafety
