  • Next in our Student Spotlight Series are Joanna Chiu and Lien Tran, two teammates investigating the rise of automation in the manufacturing industry and how it may affect the labor market. Joanna is a sophomore pursuing a B.S. in Finance with a secondary major in Economics. Last summer, Joanna participated in the Expanding Diversity in Economics Summer Institute at the Becker Friedman Institute at UChicago. This summer, she will be returning to Hyde Park as a project management intern at UChicago Urban Labs. At CWRU, Joanna is involved in Cru and Epic and works as a resident assistant. To anyone looking to join the Journal, Joanna says "this is an amazing opportunity to start learning about how to do hands on economics research with your peers! All levels of economics students are welcome to the Journal which allows for a wonderful time of learning and passing on knowledge through mentorship and editing." Lien is also a sophomore studying Finance and Economics. Along with the Journal, Lien is a member of the Vietnamese Student Association, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Women in Finance. Lien's favorite moment from the Journal so far was the brainstorming session with her team at the beginning of the semester. She explains, "when I think back on how well we worked together, I think the brainstorming session where we came up with ideas for our study project was the best. Each team member came up with a lot of new and interesting ideas during this lively exchange, which showed not only our wide range of skills but also our shared dedication." We commend Joanna and Lien for their hard work this semester, and we are excited to see their article published in the Spring 2024 edition of the Journal in just a few weeks!

  • Throughout the rest of the semester, the CWRU Journal of Economics will be highlighting our outstanding student writers and analysts on our LinkedIn page. Our first member spotlights belong to first years Sidharth Jindal and Téa Tamburo! Sid is an Applied Mathematics major with a secondary major in Economics. His Journal team is researching the effect of Ohio's Educational Choice Scholarship (EdChoice) Program on academic proficiency and school district spending. In addition to writing for the Journal, Sid is a Freshman Representative for Weatherhead Economics Society and a member of the Math Club. In his first few months in the Journal, Sid explains that he has "really enjoyed the process of starting with an initial area of interest and turning it into a full-fledged project." He also has liked working with his fellow EdChoice writers: "It has been very rewarding to use each team members' strengths to move closer to understanding the issue we've been studying. Getting to know the members on my team has been a great experience - everyone is passionate, highly knowledgeable, and exciting to work with, making the overall collaborative aspect of working together highly enjoyable." Sid and his teammates will be presenting their project at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Economics Scholars Program later this month. Sid has been a bright and dependable member of his team, and we are grateful to have him in the Journal. Téa is pursuing majors in Finance and Accounting along with a minor in Economics. Her Journal team is researching automation in manufacturing and how this may impact the labor market. Before entering CWRU, Téa interned at Ariel Investments and served as a research assistant for the University of Chicago Professor John A. List at the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics. Throughout her tenure on the Journal, Téa has most enjoyed "connecting and working on with a team of women studying both finance and economics." To anyone looking to join the Journal next Fall, she says "don't worry too much if you're not yet super experienced with research of modeling. The Journal is a great community of super supportive peers who are willing to help you and your team. It's a great opportunity to meet students interested in economics and research." We applaud Téa's hard work, professionalism, and well-roundedness; she is a rising star in the Weatherhead School of Management. Stay tuned for more student spotlights in the coming weeks!
