Sometimes, you have to take a risk and say, "We can do it," even when the margin for error is none. This is the story behind Shenseea's "Never Gets Late Here." 8 months ago, Arrad approached me to make a Game of Thrones-inspired video for Shenseea. It was pretty ambitious, but I knew that through careful planning, we could make it happen. From debating whether to use virtual production or classic green screen to getting proper motion on the artist without a hydraulic rig, we criticized and debated every idea until we had a solid plan that ensured an efficient shoot and as little time as possible in VFX. With the budget limitation, we had no margin of error for redos and no ability to research and develop. Nailing this video after the first final pass was paramount. With my amazing team of VFX artists and our VFX-specialized cinematographer Eric Ulbrich, who I brought onto this shoot, we meticulously planned every shot with Arrad and the client. We crafted storyboards and concept art and designed a quick and efficient ACES render pipeline with Houdini & Redshift. Since the entire VFX team is 100% remote, we set up channels on Slack for efficient communication and used ftrack for effective reviews within the team and with the client. For VFX editing, I used Blackmagic Design's Davinci Resolve for quick VFX cleanups in Fusion and proper ACES color management. I ensured harmony between the production and post teams, maintaining clear communication, and promptly addressing and course-correcting any issues that arose. Thanks to the trust established between our departments and the client, we functioned as a well-oiled team and delivered the project within a one-month turnaround, on budget, and with impeccable quality.
