Wabi-Sabi-the aesthetic of Japanese-describes the way of imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity. From the point of view of architectural millwork, it influences in several ways-the choice of material and the mode of approach to work. Natural Materials: Wabi-Sabi prefers organic raw materials with natural textures. In architectural millwork, this idea could lead to the use of wood, for example, with a visible grain, knots, and varying tones that highlight the aesthetics of its natural state, instead of trying to disguise imperfections. Aging and Patina: The second principle of Wabi-Sabi explains the appreciation of the aging of materials. This may involve providing a period in the building process for the millwork to gain its own patina through the use of a finish that allows the wood to age while not sealing the wood-as the designs propose the beauty of wear and use. Simplicity and Quietude: Wabi-Sabi's preference tends toward simplicity, seeking not overloaded or subdued designs. In architectural millwork, clean lines and a focus on encouraging the piece's functionality can be achieved wherein form follows the natural soul of the wood. Asymmetry: Wabi-Sabi prefers an absence of perfect symmetry but would instead prefer a celebration of the beauty in asymmetry. This can be further brings out the idea of subtle hand-crafted details in millworks or bespoke elements, which give the projects their unique and imperfect touch. Sustainability: Other aspects of sustainability speak to the idea that Wabi-Sabi honors materials with long life cycles that weather gracefully. ?LOVE HAPPY CUSTOMERS ? CSW and ISEC were contracted to fabricate Dowel Laminated Timber (DLT) service channel covers for the Newhouse Replacement Building in Olympia, WA. Thus far, this team has surpassed our expectations of craftmanship, quality, and attention to detail. The fabricator recommended introducing an 1/8” dado into the ?” plywood backing strip and recess the battens into that material in combination with a rear fastener to assist in the quality of the paneling over its life span (by preventing the material from twisting and turning and potentially moving battens out of alignment). The first-in-place mock-up was recently reviewed and our team was thrilled with the outcome. The panel was well aligned, fasteners were well concealed, spacing of wood slats were consistent, and the panel was installed in a neat and orderly manner. We can’t wait to see the finished product in the building! Thank you, Nick Clesi, AIA
