JLG, a manufacturer of construction equipment, published an insightful article about women in construction. It quoted some findings from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicating that a retirement bubble is approaching their industry. This is also true for other industrial equipment sectors that Currie serves. As many of our dealer clients have learned, we strongly advocate for our dealers to expand employment offerings to women. One notable mention in the JLG article is: "The gender pay gap is significantly smaller in construction occupations, where woman earn 95.5 cents for every dollar earned by men." Thus, because the wage gap is smaller than in other industries, and even when continuing to face challenges, women entering additional positions within the equipment distribution world, will be seeking the opportunities in that (construction) sector. The article continues by citing survey results which describe specific challenges for women. -Lack of female mentorship -Gender & sexual harassment -Lack of restrooms or locker rooms -A shortage of personal protective equipment that fits Based on what we've learned in this article, and what's available as additional research data, Currie continues to drive a culture among our dealer clients that encourage women to bring their skill sets. We must remediate any biases, whether conscious or unconscious. We must not tolerate harassment or alienation of any kind. And, we must create an environment that encourages these quality employees to thrive. Needless to say, we would be surprised to see a pay gap at any of the dealership that Currie works with. At Currie, we put our ideas into action! Our efforts to bring opportunities to women in this industry have led to the growth of our semi-annual Women of Distribution Dealer Group. In the few years since this group started, we have developed powerful leaders and mentors, closed millions of dollars of performance gaps, and seen outstanding candidates for leadership positions at our dealerships. Currie has provided a professional atmosphere where our members learn the depth of the Currie Financial Model, apply industry best practices, and learn strategies to compensate for biases and obstacles within the industry. As a woman-owned business, and a consultant to a male dominated industry, I have faced all of the same challenges as these women entering the industrial equipment space. The Women of Distribution group has been extremely successful and beneficial to participating dealerships and we hope to realize the change that we are working so hard for. The skill sets that women bring to dealerships has been mentioned before. Attracting and retaining this talent will require a new way of thinking, a cultural shift, and hard work. As the retirement bubble looms, we can not fail to attract today’s leading edge talent. Feel free to visit our website to learn more and register for the upcoming Women of Distribution meeting in Boston, MA this April.
