We dined, we discussed, and we dove into #hqim aligned with the #ScienceofReading! Educators from across Ulster, Dutchess and Westchester counties came together to learn about innovations and updates from Curriculum Associates, with Joshua Hall providing an exclusive sneak peek of #MagneticLiteracy, #MosaicoFundamentos, #MosaicoLectoescritura and #Soapbox. A huge thank you to Dr. Sarah Holbrook, who led us through her proven practices in supporting teachers through pedagogical shifts while pulling the curtain back on how #systematic, #explicit and #datadriven instruction with #PhonicsforReading has been a catalyst for growth with #middleschool students. Be sure to check out her blog, Sundays with Sarah: https://lnkd.in/e9GbegaJ #iReadyNY Jeff Ohmer

Acceleration practices in middle school math may seem effective, but this paper reveals how they can actually hinder student learning. Using Springfield Public Schools (Oregon) as a model shows how districts can take bold steps to provide students with the solid foundations needed for long-term success. ?? Can you imagine going back to 8th grade? Sounds a little terrifying, right???? Well, I did just this week—and to my surprise, it was amazing. I had the opportunity to visit a group of 8th grade students in Waco, TX to talk about something most people wouldn’t expect to wow a room full of teens: psychometrics. I braced myself for eye rolls and blank stares. But what I got instead? Thoughtful questions. Honest feedback. Nods of understanding. Even applause. We dove into measurement error and how things like test length, fatigue, stress, and engagement can influence it. I drew a diagram on the board (yes, it was epic!) and before I knew it, we were all brainstorming ways to balance these challenges together. And you know what? I learned just as much as they did. ?? 8th graders want autonomy and agency over their testing experience ? ??? Testing causes them stress—something we must keep in mind as developers ? ? Spreading tests across multiple days can heighten fatigue and anxiety To my fellow psychometricians and assessment designers: if you want "maximize the information" you get from test data, we need to get out there and talk with the students we're designing for. They’re not just test takers—they’re partners in the process. #Education #Psychometrics #EdTech Curriculum Associates
