Next week is Colorado Gives Day consider giving to Curls on the Block! This year, 2024, Curls on the Block has been pretty busy! Every week, there's a Curly Girl, parent or community organization reaching out to share a story about a Curly kid experiencing frustration with their hair journey and confidence in academics. Our mission and vision for "girls of all curls and colors to embrace, explore and empower their natural selves while working to increase engagement, investment, and commitment to careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM)" has truly taken legs as the Hair Esteem field is in high demand. From virtual to in person programming, Camp Curly has reached hundreds of those Curly kids across the nation! We're talking: Omaha, Chicago, Washington DC, Metro Denver, Los Angeles and Dallas, we're hitting all the Blocks! It was really a dream come true to also be featured on the Jennifer Hudson show in March. This year, donations went towards Curly KITS and we were able to continue to support 300 kids on their journey to STAY CURLY and boost their self E-STEAM! In this season of giving, we're excited to share a couple of opportunities to support us spreading our mission and continue our efforts of expanding. We're going to be pushing out a new campaign, and IT'S ALL GOOD! In 2016, we founded Motor City STEAM Foundation with the mission to ensure Detroit students had access to quality STEAM education. As Black women scientists from Detroit, we knew the importance of giving back to our community. What we discovered in classrooms and youth organizations shook us, there was none or very limited materials or resources to teach STEM effectively. Rather than accept this reality, we created our own solution. In 2018, The Lab Drawer was born, transforming our nonprofit's challenge into a for-profit venture that serves a global need. Today, our impact speaks volumes: over 50,000 students reached across 8 countries, with 85% being Black and Brown. With The Lab Drawer generating over a million dollars in revenue, what started as a dream to uplift Detroit's youth has evolved into a worldwide movement for educational equity. This journey proves that when you lead with purpose and stay true to your community, your impact knows no bounds. From Detroit classrooms to global learning spaces, we're showing that solutions to our community's challenges can transform education worldwide. Deirdre Roberson channeling her deep Detroit roots, curated and hosted the authentic and honest panel "What Up Doe? - Celebrating Detroit's Homegrown Tech Innovators." This wasn't just a discussion; it was a powerful showcase of local talent and vision. Alecia M. Gabriel, Ph.D. another proud product of Detroit, brought her hard-earned wisdom to the Hackathon panel.
