The smartest business advice I have ever been given was by a woman-hero and investor of mine. I idolized her. She was a lead VC investor in a former company of mine and she believed in me and I believed in her and she said the following: "Stephen there are only three things you need to do to be a great CEO 1. Create a purpose driven, values based vision people can believe in, not some BS like being #1 in xyz market or a cliche or something off of a poster, then repeat it over and over and over and over again until you want to kill yourself from the monotony and boredom, because that is what it takes to communicate a profound vision 2. Create an operating culture that encourages risk. Don't say it, do it. Because if people are afraid to make mistakes they won't take risks and what they will do is try and minimize the possibility of making mistakes and the only way to do that is to A. Play it safe B. Do nothing at all and pretend they're working or C. Play politics and take credit for things they didn't do or blame others for the mistakes they did make 3. Hire people way smarter than you. And make sure they hire people way smarter than them. And make sure those people hire people way smarter than them-- all the way down-- like turtles. Then let them do their jobs" There you have it.
