Introducing our amazing Graphics Coordinator, Recipe Developer, Class Instructor Extraordinaire, Susan! ?? Susan joined Curio in 2017 to “help out” but quickly became an essential member of the team, and is now an integral part of our events, graphics, and recipe development teams (you may recognize her if you've taken our Art of Spice Blending class!). In addition to teaching some of our class offerings and coordinating our graphics program, Susan also helps to lead our recipe development program, creating and testing delicious dishes — and feeding our team many, many cookies to get the ratios just right. Susan has been cooking since childhood and grew up in a family who gardened, cooked, canned, baked, and made things. She’s fussy about tomatoes and crazy about Kampot red long pepper.

Women in Spice Part Two: Morocco ?? Curio Spice is supporting The Rose Oasis Project to benefit the community of women farmers growing Damask roses, spices, and herbs in the Mgoun Valley of Morocco. Since 2020 we’ve been directly sourcing culinary rose products from a women-run co-op in Morocco. The culinary roses, grown 100% organically, are at risk of disappearing due to the effects of climate change. Drought and unpredictable weather threaten this plant that has become essential to the livelihoods of women in this valley. By regenerating the soil, introducing water-saving technology and poly-culture, the Rose Oasis Project serves as a model for desert agricultural communities around the world. This #WomensHistoryMonth , we're celebrating our founder and blender-in-chief Claire! Learn more about Claire's background here: "I grew up between Massachusetts and rural Maine, surrounded by gardens and forests. Summers were spent growing herbs and foraging for fiddleheads, blueberries, and wild strawberries (in the second picture, see Claire, age 6, picking crocus with her friend). Winters brought a living room floor covered in expired seed packets from my dad’s farm stand friend — I’d sort them for hours, sharing them with friends to plan gardens. At seventeen, I started traveling solo, learning about malaria-fighting plants in Ghana and peppery wild greens in Italy. My path wove through coffee, chocolate, and fine dining before leading me to spices — the perfect blend of food, culture, and geography. Before launching Curio, I spent time studying the ancient and present-day production of saffron in Greece and Turkey, self-publishing a book entitled Art of the Harvest. I then spent time in SE Asia traveling to spice origins meeting farmers and learning about the specialty spice trade. Returning home with duffel bags of spices in 2014, I launched Curio Spice Co. out of my garage with $600 and a Vitamix? blender. My strong network in the Boston and Cambridge food scene supported my business, and after a year of graveyard shifts in friends’ commercial kitchens, I opened the storefront on Mass Ave. to have my own production space and retail storefront. Today, Curio Spice has evolved into a mission-driven spice brand with two locations: our flagship location in Cambridge and our booth at Boston Public Market."
