Earlier, meaningful conversations improve people's last chapter.
关于我们
In the heart of the East Kootenay medical community, amidst the beeping of monitors and the hurried footsteps of dedicated healthcare professionals, there is a quiet change taking place. It started with a simple idea – the unwavering belief that everyone deserves to journey through life's final chapter with dignity and love. This belief blossomed into the "Curiosity, Frailty & Palliative Care" project, supported by the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice and Shared Care - Partners for Patients. At the helm are Dr. Greg Andreas and Dr. Lori Wik who are working to embed a palliative approach across the health system. Their approach embraces meaningful conversations between people, their families, and healthcare providers and aims to give a person their best possible last chapter. It all begins with an open heart, open mind, and the simple but powerful question, What Matters to You? In bringing these conversation into their own practice, Dr. Andreas and Dr. Wik have discovered that true care is not found in treatments alone; it requires curiosity and honoring each person’s unique journey. They also learned that this dialog is equally as important within the last years of a person’s life, as it is within the last hour. Dr. Andreas and Dr. Wik’s vision of an expanded palliative approach across the region is beginning to take root. Their efforts are bolstered by a passionate committee including Jared Basil, Ktunaxa Cultural Framework Educator, Dr. Curtis Bell, IH Executive Medical Director, Primary and Community Care, and Sandy Zeznik, local volunteer extraordinaire (Hospice Society and Seniors Centre). The goal is that healthcare providers have earlier What Matters to You conversations and embrace the philosophy that the key to a peaceful and dignified death lays in a curious approach – one that shifts focus from illness to a celebration of individuality, nurtured by a deep understanding of the human experience and the transformative power of empathy.

Meet Dr. Christine Pun, a passionate #PalliativeCare physician based in Sudbury, Ontario. Dr. Pun began her career in Elliot Lake, where her collaboration with the local care team inspired her to pursue Palliative Medicine. Since moving to #Sudbury, she has embraced leadership roles within NOSM University | Université EMNO, in her community, and across Northeastern Ontario to enhance access to compassionate care. For Dr. Pun, the most fulfilling part of her work is connecting with patients and families on a personal level, hearing their stories, and learning daily from the interprofessional teams she works alongside. Her advice for those considering #PalliativeMedicine? Recognize that this specialty goes beyond symptom management—it’s about leadership, advocacy, education, and serving as a guiding support in a field often misunderstood. Outside of work, Dr. Pun strikes all the right chords—both in #PalliativeCare and music (Pun intended! ??) From harmonizing in the Canadian Women Physicians’ Online Choir to knitting she’s stitching up ‘puns’ of joy! (No doubt the CSPM Physician Wellness Committee recruiting her after learning this!)
