Wondering where we’re saving lives from cervical cancer? We’ve been working in Vihiga County of Western Kenya, an area home to ~600,000 people across 5 Sub-Counties: Luanda, Sabatia, Vihiga, Emuhaya, and Hamisi. In Luanda Sub-County, there are 38,153 women of reproductive age (25-49 years) and the cervical cancer screening rate is less than 1%. Our organization has been working closely with the Vihiga County Department of Health and other local health administrators to bring access to home-based self-sample HPV testing and community-centered treatment to these women. So far, we have trained 16 healthcare providers and 111 community health workers and have worked with them to test 3,993 women, treat 764 women, and refer 11 women for advanced care. CureCervicalCancer would like to extend our gratitude to NICHOLAS NANDOYA, the Luanda Sub-County Community Health Focal Person who supervises all community health workers in the sub-county, as well as Abigael Osendi, the Head of Family Health in Vihiga County. Both of these individuals have been instrumental in our program implementation and adaptations as we navigate working with a new population. #HPVTesting #WomensHealth #HealthEquity #HealthcareAccess #CervicalCancer #CancerPrevention

关于我们
CureCervicalCancer (CCC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Since 2013, CureCervicalCancer has screened over 185,000 women and provided life-saving treatment to 12,500+ women. We have trained 750+ healthcare professionals and 1,700+ community health educators, and established over 100 sustainable “See & Treat” clinics. Our network of clinics operate in 10 different countries including Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. With early detection and treatment, cervical cancer is nearly 100% preventable, yet it claims the lives of over 300,000 women every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a woman dies of cervical cancer every two minutes, making it one of the greatest threats to women’s health. A disproportionate 90% of these women live in resource limited countries where lack of wide-scale screening fails to identify cervical cancer until it is invasive and access to treatment for invasive cancer is virtually non existent. Without the intervention of early detection and treatment, women in resource poor regions will continue to die from cervical cancer at an alarming rate. In fact, the WHO predicts that by the year 2040 cervical cancer deaths will increase by 50%. The world’s most vulnerable women are unjustly dying from a disease that we have the knowledge and tools to prevent.

We had the privilege of hosting the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation (BMSF) and showcasing our Mobile Health for Mamas Program in Kenya! BMSF has supported CureCervicalCancer since 2020 and has helped us grow our program to reach nearly 40,000 women with testing and treatment. We are thankful for the opportunity to immerse them in our mobile testing and treatment outreach, home-based self-sample HPV testing process, patient navigation system, and local county partnerships. We extend our gratitude to?the BMSF team members: ?? Christable Semondile, Senior Director of Global Cancer Disparities in Africa ?? Thabo Modiselle, Donor Support Specialist? ?? Dr. Lillian Kimani, Kenya Country Director And key stakeholder: ?? Dr. Gregory Ganda, Kisumu County Minister for Health Together, we are eliminating cervical cancer. #HPVTesting #WomensHealth #HealthEquity #HealthcareAccess #CervicalCancer #CancerPrevention #MobileClinic #CervicalCancerElimination
Today I close off the month of February 2025 in absolute awe. My team (Dr Lillian Kimani and Mr Thabo waModiselle) and I had the privilege to spend three days with the Cure Cervical Cancer (CCC) Kenya team Rebecca Lepsik Samson Boyo led by Patricia Gordon MD. We witnessed a mobile cervical cancer screening outreach where over 350 women were screened using the self-sample HPV test, they waited only for one hour for their results that were being run on the ‘big green truck’ AKA the mobile laboratory, and those who tested positive were investigated further through visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), and those eligible, treated on the same day with thermocoagulation. ?Seeing it on such a large scale is something that will stay with me for a lifetime. I also had an opportunity to witness a door-to-door screening campaign led by a CCC community healthcare worker where a woman, in the comfort of her own home, consented to taking a self-sample HPV test and carried on with her daily duties!?The healthcare worker will take the sample to the mobile laboratory along with others she will collect throughout the day and return back to the women with their results within two weeks.?This broke down so many barriers in low to middle income countries and hard to reach communities for women at risk (e.g. transportation costs to travel to a healthcare facility, losing a day’s wage and leaving behind your homestead and children) ‘just to be screened’ for cervical cancer.?With this intervention, women can be caught earlier before they are symptomatic and treating them is more complicated.?? Thank you at CCC Kenya for making screening and early detection of cervical cancer accessible and possible for the women of Kisumu County.?May this project reach every corner of the African continent.?This partnership is one we are very proud to be in.? P.S.: You may see a familiar face coming out of the tent.?It looked so easy and convenient that I could not resist! #ProudToBeBMSFoundation #CureCervicalCancerKenya #MobileHealthForMamas #HPVTestingSavesLives #EarlyDetectionSavesLives ?#EliminateCervicalCancer #WHO 90:70:90

Our team has been hard at work expanding and strengthening our Mobile Health for Mamas Program throughout rural Kenya. In the first 1.5 months of 2025, here’s what we’ve accomplished: ?? Conducted a cervical cancer awareness campaign with Kenya’s Ministry of Health and National Cancer Institute of Kenya, providing free testing and treatment to Nakuru County. ?? Established a new partnership with Vihiga County to reach 5,000 women with HPV testing and 1,500 HPV-positive women with treatment. To execute our programming, we’ve trained 111 community health workers and 16 healthcare providers. ?? Executed a One-Day Testing and Treatment Mobile Clinic Campaign in Nyando Sub-County, reaching nearly 400 women. As we continue working towards the elimination of cervical cancer, we are focused on establishing and maintaining collaborative efforts with local governments and communities. #HPVTesting #WomensHealth #HealthEquity #HealthcareAccess #CervicalCancer #CancerPrevention

Happy Cervical Cancer Prevention Week! Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, if detected and treated early. That's why CureCervicalCancer and Coalition for Women's Health in Africa (COWHA) are committed to spreading awareness about cervical cancer prevention. As their post describes, it is crucial for women to screen for cervical cancer regularly through Pap smears and/or HPV testing. ?? Did you know that cervical cancer can be cured with a treatment that only lasts up to 1 minute? If cervical cancer is detected early, a healthcare provider can perform a procedure called Thermal Ablation. They will use a heated probe to destroy the infected cells on the surface of the cervix - a process that can last 20 to 60 seconds depending on the severity. Since the process is minimally invasive and quick, and the equipment is portable and lightweight, it is highly suitable for performance in low-resource settings. CureCervicalCancer is proud to offer free self-sample HPV Testing for early detection of cervical cancer and subsequently free Thermal Ablation treatment to all women who test HPV+. We train and up-skill local healthcare providers to conduct Thermal Ablation at our mobile clinic outreaches and their own healthcare facilities, building long-term capacity for cervical cancer treatment in Kenya. Celebrate Giving Tuesday with CureCervicalCancer! During this season of thanks, our team would like to express our gratitude for your continued support of our goal to provide life-saving cervical cancer prevention care to women in remote regions around the world. In the last month, we have accomplished major milestones in our programmatic and research endeavors. ??
