?? Throwback to the 2nd Workshop on the Welfare of Common Carp! ?? On 19th September 2024, the second workshop on Operational Indicators for the welfare of farmed common carp (Cyprinus carpio) took place as part of the Cure4Aqua project—an EU Horizon initiative dedicated to improving fish health and welfare in aquaculture. ???? 19 experts from the Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Poland, and Austria came together to discuss key welfare challenges in harvesting, transport, and stunning. Issues such as prolonged air exposure, low oxygen levels, rough handling, and improper stunning techniques were identified as major stressors affecting fish welfare. Actionable solutions discussed included: ? Comprehensive training programmes for farm staff. ? Adoption of mechanised systems to reduce handling stress. ? Establishing uniform EU welfare standards for transport and stunning. ? Enhancing monitoring systems to track water quality and fish health in real time. ?? Key Takeaways: Localised, harmonised solutions are essential. The focus on refining welfare indicators will enable standardised assessments and help ensure consistent, high welfare outcomes across European aquaculture. From 13th to 18th January 2025, Mathias Middelboe (University of Copenhagen (K?benhavns Universitet) proudly represented Cure4Aqua at, Congreso Futuro, one of Chile’s leading interdisciplinary conferences. Held at the Centro Cultural CEINA in Santiago, this event brought together experts in science, technology, humanities, environment, and public policy to tackle global challenges. Mathias delivered an insightful talk on phages and fish diseases, highlighting how phage-based solutions can help combat antibiotic resistance in aquaculture. By using phages—natural viruses that target harmful bacteria—we can develop sustainable, antibiotic-free disease control methods to support a healthier aquaculture industry. With around 700 attendees per day, Congreso Futuro demonstrated the growing public interest in scientific innovation.
