I really enjoyed the timeline of Alzheimer’s scientific milestones recently published by?Nature.??Thank you to the team at?Nature?for putting this valuable timeline together.??It’s a great reminder of how far we’ve come and of how many different scientists and discoveries have contributed to our contemporary understanding of this complex disease. At CureAlz, we were proud to see the contributions of many of our Research Leadership Group (RLG) and other funded scientists noted. To highlight just some of the CureAlz-affiliated scientists referenced: Rudy Tanzi, RLG Chair, was on the 1987 team that discovered the amyloid precursor protein (APP), the first gene linked to Alzheimer’s. Shortly after, Alison Goate and John Hardy pinpointed mutations within APP that lead to the disease. Another significant breakthrough came from fellow RLG member Bart De Strooper, who clarified the role of gamma-secretase in early-onset Alzheimer’s. Meanwhile, Wilma Wasco played a role in the identification of presenilin 2, another gene tied to early-onset cases. More recently, Oskar Hansson showed that a version of the tau protein detectable by a simple blood test can serve as a biomarker to help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Numerous other CureAlz-funded scientists played pivotal roles in these and other groundbreaking milestones, all necessary steps on the path to effective therapies and prevention. Alzheimer’s still holds out far too many mysteries, but the labs we support are continuing the hard work necessary to yield vital answers. We’re far from done, but thanks to dedicated and brilliant researchers, we have the privilege of witnessing exciting advances every day.
