Christopher Siciliano and his family had a wonderful vacation at Lake Placid, New York. Who knew there were so many things to do and such a rich history. Chris shared, "We saw the some of the men’s skeleton races at the International Bobsled & Skeleton Federation’s World Championships which is currently being held at the sliding center in Lake Placid. We also skied at Whiteface which is where the 1982 Olympic downhill, slalom, and giant slalom races were held.?There is also a rumor that the next Winter Olympics might conduct their sliding events (bobsled, luge, skeleton) in Lake Placid because there are all kinds of construction problems in Italy with the venue." Sue says that "one of the best things that I have loved about Williamsburg, VA since moving here in December 2023 is the plethora and diversity of birds!?I am a novice birder who enjoys not only looking for birds and learning about them but also sketching them in my nature journal. I started this practice pre-Covid while living in the Northern Virginia area, and it is a fun thing to do while on vacation as well (Cape Cod, Dominican Republic, Palm Desert). Little did I know that Virginia’s Historic Triangle, a region that includes Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, has a wide range of diverse habitats that supports hundreds of bird species – the most of any area in Virginia! Additionally, I am lucky that my community (Ford’s Colony) has been intentional in its development and is considered a “bird sanctuary”.?Tim and I have put up bird feeders (seed and suet) and are fascinated watching the various bird behaviors.?Some wait patiently for their turn (tufted titmouse or Carolina chickadee) while others (cardinals) do not want any other birds on the feeder and will actively chase them off.?We call them the “bullies”. There is so much more to explore here – I eagerly await spring and getting out with my binoculars to see what other new birds await for me to see!" Thanks so much Sue. Who was America's first female CEO? Meet Anna Sutherland Bissell (1846-1934). Bissell, a Canadian-American, was the CEO of Bissell, "known for its carpet sweepers and vacuums." When Bissell "married?Melville R. Bissell?at 19, she became a joint partner in their crockery and china business." It was at her suggestion that he develop a carpet sweeper: the rest is history. After her husband's death in 1889, Bissell became CEO and eventually chair of the company. According to Wikipedia Page, "it was said of her that she 'studied business the way other women of her time studied French.' Lisa Boyd has long supported the work of SafeNest. "I'm still volunteering for SafeNest – the Las Vegas based nonprofit that supports victims of domestic violence.?Currently, I go to court hearings to support victims who were abused the week before, after which they got an emergency Protection Order. They now have a hearing for the judge to determine if the Protection Order will be extended.?The victim often has to face their abuser and explain why there is still a threat.?Without SafeNest, these victims would show up unassisted sitting in the waiting area with their abuser.?So we are a huge help to these victims." Principal Brian Pieper would like to formally announce Phoebe Penick’s acceptance of a fulltime position at Curcio Webb. "She did an amazing job as an intern in the fall, and it was an easy decision to bring her on fulltime in the new year. Phoebe graduated from the University of California at San Diego with a Human Biology degree in 2023. She decided not to pursue a career in biomedicine and is enjoying the consulting world where she likes working with clients and using her technical skills to help complete client projects. She works in the Oakland office as part of the actuarial staff and reports to me. In addition to her actuarial clients, she has worked on projects for the investment and admin practices and is currently supporting Kelly Tunder on a DB implementation project. Phoebe is a great example of the ease with which Curcio Webb, LLC team members routinely work across practices.
