Cuono Engineering was contracted last year for the design and detailing of framing, temporary supports and new foundations for several houses located in a flood plain in Westchester County, NY. The houses were partially gutted and lifted in order to create new elevated foundations for the existing structures. Raising a house to increase the height of its foundation is a viable solution for homeowners who face the daunting task of protecting their homes from flooding and water damage. However, it is no small feat and requires the expertise of a structural engineer who can carefully evaluate the existing foundation and design the lifting plan and new foundation. IMPACCT Senior Living Residences is a new 4-story, affordable senior housing complex, approximately 41,000 SF with 63 apartments, a rooftop terrace, and one basement level on the site of a former parking lot in Brooklyn. The building offers affordable senior living with 20 units designated for seniors at risk of homelessness. The prevalent structural framing consists of hollow-core planks on masonry-bearing walls with precast lintels. The lateral system is a combination of steel moment frames and reinforced masonry shear walls.
