"Prepare the journal entries. The answers to the vast majority of financial accounting questions lies (but not pathologically) in the journal entries, so it’s a great idea to make and understand them (which many see as 'dirty work'), even if the question doesn’t explicitly ask for the entries. Identify each account as A, L, or OE (and whether and how it impacts pretax income), and you’re off to the races.? ? It’s on the album 33 1/3. Great couplet from George Harrison’s song See Yourself:? It's easier to say you won't than it is to feel you can;? It's easier to drag your feet than it is to be a man."

"Comparison, envy, joy, and contentment. These four concepts have been swirling about all year, and I’ll endeavor to merge them. Comparing yourself to others is one of the root causes of envy. Envy can take one of two forms, which I find reminiscent of Goofus and Gallant— malicious and benign. Malicious envy causes people to drag others down, and it often stems from insecurity, a perceived lack of control over your life, and concluding that someone is undeserving of their success. Benign envy stems from the belief that you’re capable of attaining goals by exerting effort and it motivates people to raise their game to achieve similar successes as others, who they see as deserving of their achievements. Importantly, benign envy is more likely when you believe that you are capable of change."

Congratulations to our Beta Alpha Psi Chapter for placing first in the Best Practices: Impacting Your Community competition at the mid-year meeting! We're very proud of our group!
This past weekend, some of our officers and members had the opportunity to travel to Denver, CO for the Beta Alpha Psi International (BAP) Mid-Year Meeting. They were able to explore Denver, listen to excellent speakers, participate in leadership activities, present Chapter Operations, compete in the Best Practices competition, and gain valuable information on a wide variety of topics such as the CPA exams and how to manage your time better. We could not be prouder of Calista Cleveland, Ava Tyler, Nathan Golden, and Sophie Stewart for winning 1st place in the Best Practices: Impacting Your Community competition! We are also very proud of our team that presented Chapter Operations: Deven Patel, Philip Fannin, Aldo Alberico, and Caitlin Egan! Lastly, we want to thank our advisors: Christopher Issa and Zach Chism for their guidance and for helping make this experience happen--we wouldn't be successful without you both! This was such a valuable and rewarding experience. Our chapter can't wait to attend the annual meeting in San Antonio this Summer!

"It’s likely that your first round of exams is over. I gave a very straightforward exam. I want people who need convincing to see how doable answering questions is when you take the time to learn the lay of the land before diving headfirst into the math you tried to memorize. Without the why, you won’t know what numbers to use and how to use them, and unfortunately your calculator will not magically produce the answer. The first step should always be learning what everything 'is' in the simplest terms possible. Then, as Thomas Jefferson kind of said, how to determine the answer will be self-evident, and the understanding will allow you to declare your independence from underperformance. During the exam, I listened?a few times to William Tyler’s new song 'Concern,' an instrumental that captures perfectly the progression in which concern evolves into worry and then descends into anxiety, and what that can do to the way you perceive the world. This cartoon has nothing to do with any of it, I just think it’s clever."

"The 120-hour option to be a CPA saddens me on multiple levels. I propose that, because not as many people will attend graduate school and fewer will pass the CPA exam if they take it while working, the advantage of having a master’s degree and also being a CPA will be greater than ever. For example, at Meet the Firms this week, a partner with a large local accounting firm said that the knowledge gained by completing the Macc or MTA program is critical for success in the current environment. Also consider what happens to a product’s price when it is in short supply. Make like an egg—stake your claim to a seat on the sunny side by completing a master’s degree and finishing the CPA Exam prior to starting your full-time job."

"I reached the ideal level of pressure and looked carefully among the embedded pebbles for the cap but couldn’t find it; I concluded that either I lost it or it’ll turn up later and took a cap off another bicycle’s tire to replace it. I walked away and sat in a chair to put on my shoes. I glanced at my bike, and something caught my eye. The valve cap. It was right where I had looked. It’s likely I was too close to the problem to solve it, and taking a step back to gain perspective helped me see the answer."
