  • We recently came across a beautiful video that perfectly captures the Italian approach to connection. As humans, connection is at the very core of who we are.   • In October 2009, DARPA announced the Red Balloon Challenge, offering $40,000 to the first group of people to locate 10 red balloons hidden across the USA, as an exercise in terrorism and disease control. Finding 10 balloons with no clues seemed impossible, but hackers, tech companies, & universities, quickly rose to the challenge. They developed tech, analytical tools, built software, & launched publicity campaigns. However, MIT only found out about the challenge 4 days before it started & therefore knew they needed to take a different approach. So, MIT built a website asking for help, offering the following incentive: When you join the MIT Red Balloon Challenge, you'll get a unique invitation link. If your friends sign up with your link & someone you invite, or anyone they invite, wins money, so will you. They announced the prize breakdown as follows: $2,000 per balloon to the first person who sent in the correct coordinates, $1,000 to the inviter, $500 to the person who invited the inviter, $250 to the next, & so on. Two days before the launch, they activated their website. At first, nothing, but within a few hours, people began to join, referring their friends, family, work colleagues & connections. Within a short period of time the network of connections had rapidly expanded across the USA venturing even to Europe. When DARPA finally released the balloons, they expected it to take at least a week to find all ten. But within just 8 hours, 52 minutes, and 41 seconds later, MIT had found all ten balloons, using a network of 4,665 people, all committed to a combined mission. So why are we sharing this story? MIT's success lay in their vulnerability to ask for help, the strength of a shared mission, & the power of connection and word of mouth. And here at CultureSight Global, we believe in the same. Mine was called Helen, I was at the start of my career in pharmaceuticals and her belief in me made me want to do better, be better and really awakened me to what was possible for me.
