In our latest newsletter, hear from Jason Frost, CEO of Wired Human, a nonprofit designed to help children and families navigate the digital world and to support youth as advocates for online safety. We’re proud to collaborate with Jason as we work to protect young people from the dangers of explicit content. Don’t miss his opening keynote at our virtual conference on Dec. 5. At our core, Culture Reframed is dedicated to raising public awareness about the gender-based violence perpetuated by pornography. Culture Reframed’s founder and CEO Dr. Gail Dines has researched violence against women for decades and its relationship to pornography. In an interview with Deseret, Gail said, “Your sexual template is formed through pornography, the way you think about gender, the way you think about yourself, the way you think about women, the way you think about violence, all of those are shifted because what you’re doing is you’re sexualizing violence. And when you sexualize violence, you render violence invisible and you focus on the sex.” ??? The United Nations General Assembly designated November 25th #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen, stating that violence against women “remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.” Learn more about our mission and explore helpful free resources here: https://buff.ly/47wLVl4 #NoExcuse #GenderBasedViolence #PornHarms

?? In the news: Legislation is in the works to crack down on AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM); parents and experts discuss the need to replace pornography with age-appropriate examples and education on healthy relationships and sexuality. ?? As pornography grows more violent and degrading, reports show that Australians are exposed at an increasingly younger age, and relying on it for sexual education. Experts call for age-appropriate information about pornography to be added to respectful relationships education. Read more from Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC): https://lnkd.in/g9mSpYfp ?? Disney channel child actor Kaylin Hayman has become a public advocate for the California Bill expanding laws against CSAM to include AI-generated images and videos, after a predator created such nonconsensual pornography with her image. Rough sex practices are rapidly increasing as part of young adults’ sexual repertoires. Sexual choking, which is a form of strangulation, is perhaps the most prevalent of these behaviors and it also presents the greatest risks to health. Recent research has found that nearly 40% of young adult women have been choked during sex and that 1 in 3 were choked the last time they had sex. ?? In a critical?keynote presentation at our Dec. 5 virtual event, Dr. Debby Herbenick will share findings from her team’s U.S. nationally representative surveys, college campus-representative surveys, and in-depth interviews that have addressed rough sex practices, with a focus on sexual choking. The presentation will address issues such as the role of media, including pornography, as well as prevalence, frequency, consent, health implications, and educational materials for parents and professionals. Join the conversation to learn more about the role of media, health implications, and how parents and professionals can help. #WorldKindessDay is an excellent opportunity to revisit conversations with your child about good digital citizenship. ???? Parents and caregivers, consider a code of conduct for online behavior that stresses kindness, courtesy, and respect and avoids sexist, homophobic, racist, bigoted, or mean posts. Teach “pause before you post” or “take care before you share.” Before they press “send,” suggest that your kids ask themselves, ‘How would I feel if someone shared this about me?’ Teach your kids to check in with their own mood before sharing online. If they are feeling angry, upset, or frustrated, perhaps it’s not a good time to post. For more tips, check out our Parents’ Guide to Supporting Family Online Safety: https://lnkd.in/gYF7mGBj

You won’t want to miss these presentations at our December 5 virtual conference from two legal professionals working tirelessly to protect children in the digital age. Gemma Kelly is the Head of Policy and Public Affairs for CEASE UK (Centre to End All Sexual Exploitation). She has extensive experience in leading, developing and running advocacy, policy, research and campaign strategies and activities in national and international contexts. She has led coalitions bringing together charities, public bodies and campaigners to fight for justice for survivors of prostitution, human trafficking and pornography, and hold the commercial sex industry to account. In 2005, Child Protection Advocate John Carr led the campaign to get age verification made a legal requirement for online gambling websites operating in the UK. He has also played a key role in getting age verification introduced for porn sites and in 2012 persuaded Starbucks UK to restrict access to porn on their premises, a policy they later adopted elsewhere.
