The CICT is working to improve the workplace experience for employees in the construction sector and drive productivity
关于我们
Culture in Construction is an initiative of the Construction Industry Culture Taskforce (CICT) - comprising the Australian Constructors Association, the Governments of New South Wales and Victoria and leaders from industry and academia. Since August 2018, we've been working to develop a new Culture Standard which will lift the productivity and performance of construction and address the major issues holding back our industry - excessive work hours, fatigue, poor mental health, and failure to attract a diverse workforce. The CICT works alongside the Construction Industry Leadership Forum (CILF), a joint forum of leaders from industry and the Victorian and NSW public sectors. CILF aims to drive improved collaboration and action around procurement and delivery of major government infrastructure projects, including by addressing capability and capacity constraints.

Hear from Diana Burgess and Dean Riha talking about the #CultureStandard at #FF24. ? ? https://lnkd.in/g6tEXQnW Representing Culture in Construction, Diana said: “It is important that the Culture Standard is embedded into procurement as this is the key lever for change for our industry. It means that projects will be tendered based on the requirements in the Culture Standard and the obligations imposed on client and contractor will be administered throughout the delivery of the project.” ? ? https://lnkd.in/g6tEXQnW Dean, Alliance Manager Metropolitan Roads Program,?experienced?the full life cycle of the Culture Standard on one of the five pilot projects. Dean answered the question often asked about the effect on time, cost and productivity while applying the 50-hour capped working week required by the Culture Standard.? ? We're set to launch an exciting new initiative, supported by the NSW Government’s Women in Construction Industry Innovation Program grant, to attract mid-career women to the construction industry. This initiative will see major contractors come together to offer women the chance to experience what a career in construction is really like. Many women don’t realise that the skills they have gained in other industries can easily transfer to construction. Bringing these women into our industry can accelerate the cultural shift we desperately need—it’s about more than just gender balance. The Attract Initiative was developed by our Culture Committee, led by JAYNE WHITNEY from John Holland. It is designed to showcase the industry’s evolving culture and the abundant opportunities available to women. “As women, we often hesitate to apply for roles unless we have direct experience. We want women to know that construction welcomes them and that their experience in other fields is valuable. There’s a role for everyone in this industry." Our Attract initiative is part of a broader pledge by member companies to drive cultural change within the industry. In addition to attracting a new wave of talent, efforts to establish workplace flexibility policies and achieve the Workplace Gender Equality Agency Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation are well underway. Already, four ACA member companies have achieved this citation, demonstrating significant progress toward the ACA’s pledge to create a more inclusive industry from the ground up. ACA thanks the NSW Government for supporting the Attract initiative. The NSW Government’s Industry Innovation Program is one of four priority actions for the Women in Construction Program. The grants program was established to fund innovative ideas in industry to support the creation of inclusive workplace cultures, attract and retain women to the construction sector, support female employees and women in leadership roles. Let's have a #cultureconvo about appropriate amenities!? ? Check National Association of Women in Construction (AU) post on what does appropriate amenities look like!?? Culture in Construction is by your side.??https://lnkd.in/g5rHZwqF? ? One of the #DiversityandInclusion’s target of the #CultureStandard is: To ensure appropriate amenities are provided.?? ? While trialling the draft Culture Standard, the five Pilot Projects were driven to provide inclusive workplaces to support a diverse workforce. The?'Culture in Construction Pilot Projects: Interim Report', led by RMIT University,?confirmed that: “Across all projects (...) the site facilities provided for women are very good. For example, women-only toilets, women’s change rooms, women-only sheds and the provision of sanitary products were typical features of amenities provided.”? ? To achieve this, Pilot Projects considered the following:? - Start early and discuss about diverse and inclusive facilities at site establishment.? - In determining the location, consider the most appropriate balance of privacy, accessibility, safety and security.? - Identify the right quantity of toilets --- some recommendations by WorkSafe Victoria here. (https://lnkd.in/gPgEMVky)?? - Break the barriers by initiating the discussion onsite about toilets’ access.? - Consider the quality of the facilities and ensure adequate maintenance during the life of the project.?? - Consciously rethink of toilets’ location when changing site / office layout.? - Be accountable, deal with issues quickly and effectively. The?Interim Report unveiled that woman across the five Pilot Projects “observed that [the amenities provided] to be better than they have experienced at previous projects.”? ? We understand every site establishment has its own constraints, whether it’s a multiple-km alignment, several storeys building or a site requiring ongoing layout changes. A guide to support the planning of inclusive facilities is being developed to support the future implementation of the Culture Standard.? ? The Diversity & Inclusion component of the Culture Standard focuses on #InclusiveWorkplaces, #TargettingDiversity and #Remuneration. How flexible is flexible? Let’s recap...?????#cultureconvo ? The Time for Life component of the #CultureStandard focuses on #WorkPeriods and #Flexibility. The Flexibility targets are: ·??????All people in the Industry have access to flexible work options ·??????Develop and implement a flexibility plan for the project ·??????Report on performance against this plan. ? While trialling the Culture Standard, the five Pilot Projects have undertaken a range of flexibility initiatives: ·??????“flee by 3” encourages employees to finish their workday by 3pm one day a week ·??????Meeting free Mondays ·??????Wellness RDOs for staff, aligned with industry-RDOs ·??????Creation of ‘My time’ board, openly displaying when team members are working flexibly ·??????Annual wellbeing allowance to spend on individuals’ choice of health-related activity ·??????Flexible work policy ·??????Flexibility workshops ·??????Personalised flexibility framework such as job-sharing ·??????Leadership teams supporting flexible working and leading by example. ? These initiatives recognise that Flexibility does not mean the same to everyone. Options have provided employees with the autonomy to manage their work in a way that best suits their individual needs and circumstances whilst maintaining delivery on work commitments. This was the result of open and transparent conversations with line managers and HR department, to find suitable solution together. Employees from the Pilot Projects have reported enhanced balance between their work and personal lives. These measures collectively contribute to a more positive and supportive work environment, leading to enhanced overall wellbeing within the industry. ? Each flexibility initiative is supporting the Time For Life pillar of the Culture Standard. The feedback from piloting shows the importance of making flexibility options #visible and #leadership to drive genuine cultural change, from both the client and contractor. ? Today at #FF24, Culture in Construction heard the harsh #truth.?“Love it and leave it” - this is the conundrum of the industry.? ? We know that people love working in the construction industry. We also know that they leave it due to an incompatible lifestyle.? ? The CICT aims to change this statement and make the construction industry an industry-of-choice.? ? We are working towards implementation of the #CultureStandard, with the aim to make the construction industry more accessible to all, and better support our people who love what they do.? ? Depending on which phase you are in your life, the #CultureStandard aims to give you the opportunity to pursue a balance. While the three pillars of the #CultureStandard need to be addressed together,?#TimeforLife is the catalyst for positive change.? #cultureconvo Genuinely promoting flexibility and capping work hours will ensure people have adequate time to rest and pursue life activities. Balancing work and life supports positive health and wellbeing and creates a work environment that supports diversity. The construction workforce reports significantly higher working hours than those working in other industries. Accordingly, 59% report dissatisfaction with their work-life balance, compared with just 39% of the general population.?? ? The Culture Standard seeks to address excessive working hours and provide greater balance for the workforce.? It recognises that whilst many workers support work hour caps some prefer to continue to work longer hours.
