The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has brought critical benefits to Boomers and aging adults. It ensures access to preventive care services like cancer screenings and wellness visits, caps prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries, and offers protections for those with pre-existing conditions. For seniors managing chronic illnesses, these provisions have been a lifeline. But with discussions of repealing or overhauling the ACA, these protections could look very different in the future. While we don’t know exactly how changes to the ACA might unfold, what we do know is that they could fundamentally alter what Boomers have come to understand and rely on in their healthcare. We can only hope these changes will lead to better care, but there’s no certainty—and that uncertainty alone could create confusion for seniors navigating an already complex system. I know no one wants to talk about it, but we have to address the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on healthcare—and the hard truth that Medicare services are being dropped in some areas across the country. We need to recognize what healthcare is beginning to look like, especially for our aging population. Seniors already face an uphill battle with complex paperwork, overwhelming jargon, and endless mailers. Now, imagine coupling that with the devastating news that the essential care they’ve worked hard for is no longer accessible. So, who fills the gap when Medicare pulls out?
