Thank you to Bridget Kraus, CPSM , Suzanne Doody, CPSM , and Mara Manchek for the opportunity to speak with members of SMPS—Society for Marketing Professional Services on a topic I am so passionate about “Unlocking the Power of Relationships for Leadership Growth”. I love speaking on this topic and helping others in their leadership growth. Leadership is hard and we don’t have to do it alone.     Great news! Your culture is your competitive advantage to thrive the demographic drought. While the demographic drought is the new normal as the expected labor work force will taper down in the next 25 years, there are actions you can take today to position your organization to thrive the demographic drought. This was part of a discussion I had earlier this week with CEOs. We discussed: ? Employees are no longer disposable. The question to ask is "What actions are you taking to retain talent?" ? Seasoned employees who leave the workplace are not easy to replace. Questions to ask are "Does your organization practice succession planning?" and "How are you planning to transfer knowledge from your seasoned talent before they leave?" ? New expectations in the aftermath of the Covid Pandemic around flexibility, culture, and wellbeing are playing an increasingly decisive role in employment decisions. The question to ask is "Are you changing how you value your employees to attract and retain talent?". We also discussed the five stages of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging maturity and the actions they can take to progress in these stages. I will share more on this in a future post.     ? Do you have a strategy to thrive in the demographic drought? As I have been preparing to speak with a group of CEOs later this month, I'm interested in understanding how well leaders are prepared for the challenges of the demographic drought. Let's start with understanding what it is and what caused it. What is the demographic drought? A labor shortage where there are not enough people to sustain the labor market. Also referred to as a Sansdemic. What caused it? There are multiple factors that are concerning and we should consider: ? Mass exodus of baby boomers from the workplace ? Record low labor force participation rate of working age people ? Lowest birth rate in history (we are living below the 2.1 birth replacement rate since the early 1970s) ?? This is why leaders should be concerned with the demographic drought. Those who understand it and are actively cultivating a healthy culture are ahead of everyone else in attracting and retaining talent. The great news is your culture can be your competitive advantage in a tight labor market. ?? The question to ask yourself as a leader is "Are you doing enough?".     ?? Monday Morning Motivation - lifting someone up does not mean tearing someone else down. When leaders humanize leadership, they foster a culture where their team members are motivated to engage, grow, and support each other. These leaders build trusting relationships, coach and provide constructive feedback, and celebrate their team member's accomplishments along the way.     ?? Monday morning motivation - give yourself grace and see the gift when circumstances change from the plan (hence the late post). I typically spend part of my weekend planning for the upcoming week, including drafting my linkedIn posts. This weekend I enjoyed the beautiful weather and spent some unexpected time with friends and family and loved it! I embraced the gift of relishing that time rather than stressing about the change in plans and possible set back. Yes, today was especially busy and it was worth it!     How do you show up when you deliver feedback? "Humanizing" feedback through our thoughtful choice of words and in our delivery goes a long way to show our support and is better received. I participated in a leadership group discussion yesterday on this topic and it become clear to me that we still have an opportunity to improve this skill. As we approach mid-year, this is a good time to reflect on how we are giving meaningful recognition and feedback. ??     I ?? this quote. This is my "why" and purpose for partnering with leaders on their organizational culture. Over my 25+ years in the business, I can distinctly recall those moments when leaders lifted my up, made me feel heard and valued, and supported me beyond my professional role. These are the leaders who led with head and heart. I also recall those leaders whose actions made me feel the opposite - it's not the best feeling. Many of you have seen this quote before.
