A Northvolt company, advancing next-generation lithium-metal battery technology
关于我们
Cuberg, a Northvolt company, is commercializing next-generation lithium-metal battery technology to power the future of electric mobility. Operating from the Bay Area, Cuberg’s groundbreaking lithium-metal battery technology delivers generational improvements in energy density and power output and has been validated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Lithium-metal technology is ideally suited to power the next generation of electric vehicles on the ground and in the air, offering longer ranges and flight times, greater payloads, and lower cost of ownership. The technology, based on a non-flammable liquid electrolyte combined with a lithium metal anode, is fully compatible with existing lithium-ion manufacturing infrastructure to accelerate time-to-market.

We’re excited to release a validation report of our first-generation lithium-metal battery module. The results highlight the exceptional performance of Cuberg's lithium-metal technology and represent the world’s first third-party validation of a lithium-metal battery module. ? While a testament to the performance of lithium-metal technology, the results also mark a significant step forward in the industrialization of the technology —?something which is key as we look beyond aviation applications for lithium-metal technology. ? Shauna McIntyre, Cuberg CEO, comments: "Our mission at Cuberg is to expand the frontier of electrification. The validation of our first lithium-metal module marks a milestone in our journey towards commercial lithium-metal battery solutions. With a focus on performance, safety and reliability, we're committed to accelerating the adoption of electrification across new market segments and the transition to a cleaner future." Earlier this week, Cuberg engaged in the 2024 Milken Institute Conference, with CEO Shauna McIntyre joining panel discussions on Critical Minerals and the Future of Mobility. ? Through discussions both on-stage and off, we were reminded that?developing next-generation lithium-metal batteries, as we are at Cuberg, is both exciting and tremendously significant for the future of mobility, but that ensuring a sustainable model for the battery industry, particularly in relation to critical minerals, is fundamental to wider success in the energy transition. ? Our appreciation goes out to the organizers of what was a fantastic event, drawing together a diverse collection of minds for illuminating discussions and encouraging perspective on the paths ahead as we work towards a more sustainable future. ? Thank you also to our co-panelists:? The Future of Mobility?with?Pablo Di Si, CEO of?VW?America,?éric Martel, President and CEO of?Bombardier,?Stella. Li, CEO BYD Americas,?Andrew Littlefair, CEO Clean Energy, and?Diane Brady, Executive Director of Fortune Live Media.? ? At Cuberg, we’re building batteries for a brighter, more sustainable future. We know batteries will be key, but we also want to build a battery industry that benefits from far greater representation of women than we see today. Taking an opportunity to reflect on where we are and what we can do to accelerate that future, we marked International Women’s Day on Friday with a panel discussion at our office. Leading the discussion were Shauna McIntyre (Cuberg CEO), Arielle Ring (CFO), Anne Torricelli (Head of Business Development), Olivia Risset (Head of Supply Chain), Asma Sharafi (Staff Engineer, Cell Mechanical Design), and Hannah Lundeen (Senior Workforce Development Specialist).

Congratulations to the entire Northvolt team for achieving this tremendous milestone.
Yesterday, NOVO Energy, the joint venture between Northvolt and Volvo Cars, celebrated the start of construction for its battery factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. Located near Volvo Cars' manufacturing plant, the start of construction marks a significant milestone in the transition towards sustainable energy and mobility. On the site of the NOVO Energy gigafactory, Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, Peter Carlsson, CEO of Northvolt, and Adrian Clarke, CEO of NOVO Energy, placed the cornerstone for the future gigafactory and underscored their joint commitment to advancing the electrification of transportation and their partnership. Peter Carlsson, Co-Founder and CEO of Northvolt, commented: “This joint venture is about creating a high-performance battery cell for high-performance cars, and we are aiming to produce it with the lowest CO2-footprint in the automotive industry. Volvo Cars and Northvolt share a commitment to innovation and sustainability, together we will produce batteries for the next generation electric Volvo cars.” Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, commented: “Today’s start of construction is an important milestone for Volvo Cars as we move steadily towards becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030. Electric cars are our future, and our record 2023 sales performance demonstrates that customers like what they see in our electric portfolio. In coming years we will further expand our electric portfolio, and this new battery plant will play a crucial role in powering those cars and achieving our ambitions.” Groundworks for the NOVO Energy gigafactory, with a potential cell manufacturing capacity of up to 50 GWh per year, started in 2023. Production is scheduled to start in 2026.

I'm excited to share that in January I joined Cuberg, the high-performance battery subsidiary of Northvolt, as its first CFO. Northvolt is creating the world's greenest battery and is the Western champion of battery manufacturing. Cuberg leverages the manufacturing capabilities and supply chain infrastructure Northvolt has built for lithium ion to bring to market the world's highest performance battery. Our li-metal battery systems will electrify some of the hardest to abate mobility applications, including aviation. Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting US Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild, and our local congresswoman Barbara Lee to cut the ribbon on our pilot manufacturing line.
Advanced batteries made in the U.S. ???? Today, Secretary Granholm and Rep. Barbara Lee celebrated the opening of Cuberg’s expanded manufacturing facility in California. The company received critical early support from DOE and is a testament to how public-private cooperation can propel clean energy tech.

Cuberg's new CEO, Shauna McIntyre was introduced today by Northvolt CEO and Co-Founder Peter Carlsson during a ribbon-cutting event for the opening of a new facility for the development of next-generation lithium-metal battery technologies in the Bay Area. We were honoured to have the new facility inaugurated by Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Secretary of Energy, who provided a keynote address, alongside David Hochschild, Chair of the California Energy Commission and Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California’s 12th District. Shauna commented: “Northvolt is a pioneer in its approach, bringing the necessary combination of speed, scale and sustainability to the battery industry. I am honored to join the company and take on the leadership of Cuberg. I look forward to working with the employees of Cuberg in driving the development of lithium-metal technology towards fulfilling its enormous potential. The facility inaugurated today will play a key role in that future, and in enabling new frontiers of electrification with next-generation battery technology.”

Cuberg Founder and CEO Richard Wang spoke at the BloombergNEF Summit in San Francisco this January as part of a plenary moderated by Takehiro Kawahara. https://lnkd.in/gbj4sK-x Richard treated the audience to an exclusive reveal of performance metrics from an upcoming validation report of Cuberg’s #evtol Battery Module. Cuberg’s Module has achieved an externally validated specific energy of at least 270 Wh/kg, which massively expands the possible flight range of a typical 7,000 lb eVTOL. Click here to watch a video recording of Richard’s conversation with Mr. Kawahara and read a transcript.
