Did you know that the majority of firearm-related deaths in Colorado and nationally are suicides? The good news is that suicidal crises are often brief, which means that putting time and space between a person and a lethal method, such as a firearm, can be lifesaving. The University of Colorado Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative has created several resources to help people learn about options and resources for secure firearm storage, which can help avert firearm suicides as well as prevent firearm misuse and theft. We had a wonderful time decorating bags for Project Angel Heart with our friends at the Injury & Violence Prevention Center as part of the Colorado School of Public Health’s Volunteer Week! ??
Last week, our team came together for Colorado School of Public Health’s Volunteer Week! We decorated clothing bags for Project Angel Heart, donated clothing, and reconnected again in person. It was extra special to have team members join us from Grand Junction and as far away as Washington D.C. Another highlight was spending time with two adorable bunnies while we volunteered! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this impactful and memorable day!

Today, FIPI faculty and staff had the opportunity to meet with a group of state officials to share the work that FIPI does and discuss how our state can approach firearm injury prevention from a non-partisan, evidence-based lens. Thank you to Lily G. at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and University of Colorado Office of Government Relations for bringing this group together! We are excited to continue these important discussions about how everyone can play a role in firearm injury prevention.

Last week, FIPI faculty and staff trained a group on how to deliver the intervention, which provides households with:? ??no-cost secure firearm storage devices? ??handouts on secure firearm storage practices? ??educational materials on recognizing crisis warning signs? ??information on mental health resources?
