New research in Frontiers in Remote Sensing highlights the capability of locally trained deep learning models to map forest structure at a higher resolution and with greater accuracy than existing maps — capturing the significant impact of fire on California’s forests in recent years. Led by Samuel Favrichon, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory postdoctoral researcher, in collaboration with CTrees scientists Yan Yang, Ricardo Dalagnol da Silva, Fabien H Wagner, Le Bienfaiteur Sagang, and Sassan Saatchi, the research team used a cutting-edge combination of LiDAR data, satellite imagery, and deep learning methods to map forest height across California during two time periods (2019-2020 and 2021-2022). The model measured change in California's forest height between the two study periods, revealing that fires caused more than 60% of large forest disturbances during the period of study. Given the escalating climate threats to forests in California and beyond, such advancements in mapping and monitoring forest structure are needed to support better forest management techniques and help mitigate future wildfire risks. This has been a difficult time for CTrees and the Greater Los Angeles area, as devastating fires have burned across the region since last week. We are happy to report that all members of our team are safe, but we want to recognize the scale of loss and the impact on our local community. More than two dozen Angelenos have died, and thousands have lost their homes, including a member of our staff. The Eaton fire has had a particular impact on our team, and our neighbors and colleagues at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. Evacuation orders, poor air quality, and arid conditions continue to widely affect our community in Pasadena and beyond, with several fires still active across the county. We have been heartened by the many messages of concern from friends near and far, as well as the acts of generosity we have seen as community members come together to care for one another. In the coming weeks, we will continue looking for ways to offer support to those affected by the fires. The fires are also a reminder of the importance of community, preparedness, and accurate information in the face of escalating threats from climate change. We recognize the critical contributions of those in government, public safety, civil society, and science who are leading response efforts across our region. The months and years ahead will be challenging, but our community is in this together. Read the full letter from our Director of Marketing & Communications, Daniel M.: https://lnkd.in/eiwe9FkU

In Brazil's Cerrado savanna, wildfires burned through 97% of the Serra das Araras conservation area this past year, according to recent reporting from Mongabay. While fire is an important part of the Cerrado’s ecosystem — one of the most biodiverse places in the world — human-induced changes to fire patterns pose an existential threat to the reserve and the many species living within it. Since August 2024, CTrees' Land Use Change Alerts (LUCA) platform detected more than 1,000 hectares of disturbance in the reserve, an area nearly two and half times the size of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Development of LUCA is led by CTrees research scientist Adugna Mullissa, Ph.D. Based on ESA Sentinel-1 radar data, and backed by a peer-reviewed scientific methodology, LUCA provides biweekly updates and allows users to visualize and quantify disturbance alerts within any administrative area or custom boundary, like that of the Serra Das Araras. Keep an eye out for updates to LUCA in the new year, and learn more about the open data platform through the links in the comments section below ??
