Crews from Hanford Mission Integrated Solutions (HMIS) regularly pick up tumbleweeds from across the 586-square-mile Hanford site and bring them to Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) for disposal. “The wind blows in the desert and the tumbleweeds accumulate on every fence and structure on site,” explained Ben Halley-Hanson, Project Manager for the ERDF. ? ERDF disposed of 132 cubic meters (1,420 square feet) of tumbleweeds in 2024. CTI and VNS Federal Services operate the ERDF and the Integrated Disposal Facility at Hanford as part of CTI-VNSFS Environmental (CVE), a U.S. Small Business Administration-approved mentor-protégé joint venture, for Prime Contractor Central Plateau Cleanup Company.
