Identified as CVE-2024-44133, the flaw carries a medium severity rating. Apple has released a fix as part of macOS Sequoia's September 16, 2024, security update. A new ransomware group, Cicada3301, has rapidly emerged as a major threat since June 2024, targeting businesses across critical sectors in the US and UK. In just three months, the group has leaked data from 30 companies on their dedicated sites, highlighting the seriousness of the threat. Cicada3301's ransomware, written in Rust, operates across multiple platforms—Windows, Linux, ESXi, and PowerPC—using advanced encryption techniques like ChaCha20 and RSA. Marriott and Starwood have been fined and mandated to implement a comprehensive security program following three major data breaches between 2014 and 2020, affecting over 344 million customers globally. Retailers are facing an alarming surge in AI-driven attacks, with over 569,000 incidents per day, according to a recent six-month analysis by cybersecurity firm Imperva. A ransomware attack in August 2024 led to the theft of over 50,000 internal documents from Nidec Precision (NPCV), a Vietnam-based subsidiary of Nidec, which were leaked online after the company refused to pay the attackers' ransom demands. The stolen data, which included sensitive business documents like green procurement policies, health and safety guidelines, and internal correspondence, was posted on a dark web leak site operated by the Everest ransomware group.
