Did you know Jane Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize? In 1899, Addams helped establish one of the nation's first consumer protection organizations. The National Consumers League (NCL) was founded to advocate for workers' rights and ethical business practices. The NCL fought against child labor, pushed for fair wages, and exposed dangerous working conditions in new, emerging industries. Through consumer and social activism, the NCL encouraged people to support businesses that treated workers and consumers fairly. Addams’ leadership helped shape labor and consumer laws that are still relevant to this day. Her work proved that informed consumers have the power to drive real change on the local, state, and national levels. Ever heard of Mary Heslin? Heslin was the second woman ever to serve as our department's commissioner, and she was also the longest serving commissioner in our agency's history (1975-1990). She was an advocate for consumer rights, most notably with Lemon Law protections. ???? Through her role as Commissioner of Consumer Protection from 1975 to 1990, Heslin supported initiatives to jumpstart and uphold Connecticut’s pioneering Lemon Law program, which has returned over $60 million in refunds or replacements to consumers of defective vehicles since 1982. Her efforts ensured accessible arbitration processes and empowered consumers to hold manufacturers accountable for warranty breaches, ensuring fairness and accountability in the automotive marketplace. Heslin’s commitment to consumer education and enforcement continues to protect Connecticut families from predatory practices. Born in 1859 in Philadelphia, Florence Kelley was a fierce advocate for social reform, workers’ rights, and racial equality. As the first general secretary of the National Consumers League (NCL), she fought to end child labor, improve workplace conditions, and establish fair wages. Kelley’s activism led to the creation of 10-hour workdays, state minimum wage laws, and the NCL’s “white label” program, which encouraged consumers to support ethical businesses. She also played a key role in founding the NAACP and championed women’s suffrage. A lifelong fighter for justice, Kelley’s impact on consumer protection and labor rights is still felt to this day.
