On October 22, the Center on Transnational Business and the Law and the Georgetown Brazilian Law Association - BrazLA, in collaboration with FGV Direito Rio, hosted a workshop titled “Capital Market Regulation: Dialogue between the US and Brazil.” This event provided a unique platform to compare the regulatory frameworks of the US and Brazil and to spotlight the distinctive aspects of each system. The first panel, “Current Issues and Challenges Faced by Securities and Exchange Commissions in the US and Brazil,” featured Jo?o Pedro Nascimento and Alexander Cohen, with moderation by Julia Bernardes Cunha. The second panel, “Recent Changes and Case Studies: A Brazil-US Perspective,” included insightful contributions from Rodrigo Rocha Monteiro de Castro, Christina Chalk, Filipe Areno, moderated by Icaro Demarchi Araujo Leite. The session concluded with thoughtful closing remarks from our Co-Director, Professor Don Scott De Amicis. On 16 April, Center on Transnational Business and the Law hosted a workshop on the U.S. Economic Sanctions: Navigating National Security, Foreign Policy, and Administrative Law. We would like to thank our esteemed guests for their insightful contributions, Professor Christine Abely from New England Law, Boston, Stephanie C, Assistant Chief Counsel at the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), Charlie Lyons Associate Attorney at Ferrari & Associates, P.C. and Francesca Finelli, PhD Candidate at the University of Luxembourg and Pisa, currently visiting researcher at Georgetown Law, as well as our Professor Don Scott De Amicis for moderating the discussion. The workshop combined different perspectives on economic sanctions, bringing together Government insights, academic views, and private practice. The discussion started with an overview of OFAC’s current challenges in designing economic sanctions and coordinating with different actors in the international arena, for example in the context of Russia sanctions. The discussion then moved to recent enforcement trends, illustrating the ‘causing’ language under US sanctions law, and the use of broad jurisdictional hooks to enforce apparent violations against non-US entities.? The second part of the discussion focused on the use of designations and the significant impact on the lives of targeted individuals, including reputational and long-term financial damage. This led to an assessment of the review mechanisms available to challenge the validity of designations, and concluded with a comparative analysis of US and EU remedies, highlighting the particularities of each legal system. #Georgetown #Law #CTBL

This remarkable event provided the audience with insights into the legal, cultural, and entrepreneurial strategies critical for Chinese companies in the U.S. market.
