Strengthening Our Community: Immigration Informational Session in Norwich Last night, LEAD and Castle Church hosted an impactful Immigration Informational Session in Norwich. This was our second session in Norwich and fifth across Connecticut, continuing our mission to empower our communities with essential immigration rights information. During the Event: - Connecticut Attorney General William Tong(State of Connecticut - Office of the Attorney General) emphasized that Connecticut’s policy is to "protect, honor, and respect our immigrants and immigrant families." - Panelists, including State Senator Cathy Osten, Councilman Swaranjit Singh Khalsa, Attorney Maggie Rodriguez (IRIS: Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services), UCFS Healthcare Representative Norma Glover, and Attorney Philip Berns, shared valuable insights on legal rights, resources, and protections under state laws like the Trust Act. - The discussion focused on birthright citizenship, legal resources, and the role of local law enforcement in protecting immigrant rights. LEAD provided "Red Cards" and the Governor’s Preparedness Packages to ensure families are informed and prepared. The work doesn’t stop here! We are committed to hosting more sessions statewide to continue providing critical information, legal resources, and a safe space for community members to ask questions. In mid-January, five proposed charter schools in Connecticut received initial approval from their state Board of Education. And, due to the launch of the North Star Fellowship, it's likely Connecticut will see more charter schools in the future. The fellowship, created in partnership between Connecticut education organization LEAD and The Mind Trust, was developed to foster the development of charter school leaders in the state.
