RNA molecules send “messages” to cells on how, when, and where to build proteins in our body. When this message is disrupted, neurodegenerative diseases like frontotemporal dementia and ALS can occur. Ambika Basu, PhD candidate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology explained this during her presentation “RNA Zipcode: Signed, Sealed, Delivered” at CSU’s 3MT competition. Ambika’s research aims to decode the signals that direct RNA molecules to the right places—work that could lead to new treatments aimed at restoring proper RNA molecular movement and messaging to cure disease. ???? The College of Natural Sciences is excited to welcome Kristen Buchanan as the new Chair of the Department of Physics! ?? Professor Kristen Buchanan, a condensed matter physicist, was recently named department chair of physics at Colorado State University. With a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Alberta, Canada, and 17 years at CSU, she has made significant contributions to both physics research and education. ?? That's not all—Buchanan is making history as the first female chair in physics at CSU. We are honored to celebrate her accomplishments during #WomensHistoryMonth! ???? This Women's History Month, meet a few of CSU’s leading female researchers ?? Punya Nachappa, Associate Professor, CSU College of Agricultural Sciences: She works with farmers to address challenges related to crops critical to Colorado and the world — hemp, potatoes and, most importantly, wheat. Lynn Shore, Partners for Excellence Professor, Colorado State University College of Business: She has built a career examining one of society’s most pivotal — and at times perplexing — relationships: that of employee and employer. Her research focuses largely on the psychological contracts between employers and employees, perceptions that workers have of organizational support, and expectations of leadership. Yan Vivian Li, Associate Professor, CSU College of Health and Human Sciences: Her research seeks to fundamentally understand, assess and control the functionality and performance of fibers and fabrics at the nanoscale. That can mean anything from making fabric water resistant to inventing new, more environmentally friendly materials to innovative medical textiles. Tara Opsal, Professor and Department Chair, College of Liberal Arts: When she learned that 70% of incarcerated women have been the victims of physical, sexual or emotional violence, she was astounded and decided she wanted to make sure her research made a difference. That’s exactly what her latest work, a multi-stage research project in collaboration with Larimer County Community Corrections, has done. Kristen Buchanan, Professor and Department Chair, Colorado State University | College of Natural Sciences: When she came to CSU in 2008 she was only one of two women faculty in the Department of Physics. This semester, she started work as the first female chair of that department. Julie Moreno, Assistant Professor, CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences: She researches neurodegenerative disorders — diseases that are destructive to the nervous system, especially the brain. Kristen Rasmussen, Associate Professor, CSU Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering: Her lab at CSU centers on the weather-climate interface to further study the dynamics of convective storms – intense weather events characterized by strong up and down drafts and how they may change in a future climate. Courtney Schultz, Professor and Director of School of Global Environmental Sustainability, Warner College of Natural Resources: At a university that ranks among the top for sustainability, she is a leader of leaders. In November 2024, she was selected to lead CSU’s School of Global Environmental Sustainability. Psychology Professor Lorann Stallones recently discussed her highly praised 2023 research, "Sustainability and the Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing Industries: An Enhanced One Welfare Perspective" with Animals MDPI. Professor Stallones is an expert in One Health - the idea that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are related. Her paper explores the impacts of horse racing on animals, humans, and the environment and offers suggestions to make improvements across the sector. The couple embody Colorado State University's stalwart spirit - never giving up in the face of adversity or when the odds felt stacked against them.
